Bayern party arrives in Chinese capital

Postby FCBayernNews » Mon Jul 23, 2012 10:30 am

Ni hau Beijing - good day Beijing! After a flight lasting just over nine hours, the Bayern party landed in the Chinese capital at a quarter to midday local time on Monday morning for the first stop of a five-day tour. And Germany's biggest club received an extraordinary welcome at Beijing International Airport, with some 1,000 fans waiting in the arrivals hall, and working themselves into a frenzy as the stars briefly posed for photos and autographs.

After that, the squad transferred by bus to team base the Westin Chaoyang in the Sanlitun district. The first appointment was a light lunch, followed by a press conference hosted by FCB partner Yingli solar at 3 pm, in which chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, coach Jupp Heynckes and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer took questions from the media. At the same time, Arjen Robben and Holger Badstuber signed autographs in the nearby adidas store.

Ambassadors for German football

"We travel as ambassadors of German football to a country with huge potential for the future. With four weeks to go until the Bundesliga starts, you have to take a chance like this if it's on offer. We want to be a global player, so I think we have to take this chance," club president Uli Hoeneß said prior to take-off from Munich.

The People's Republic of China is the most populous nation on earth with 1.34 billion inhabitants. It is also the fastest-growing sports market in the world. Football is the second most popular discipline behind basketball, but is catching up rapidly. FCB already enjoy awareness levels of 86 percent in China but are aiming to boost that figure. "I think we can contribute to FC Bayern taking another step towards global status," said Hoeneß.

Immediately after the sponsors' appointments, the squad travelled to the Workers' Stadium for a 90 minute training session. The workout was largely designed to help the players shake off the effects of the long flight. On Tuesday evening at 7:30 pm local time (1:30 pm CET) the stadium provides the venue for the first of two friendly matches on the tour. Bayern face the side currently lying fifth in the Chinese Super League, Beijing Guoan, whose ranks include former Bundesliga player Jiayi Shao.
