Bayern launch players’ code of conduct

Ottmar Hitzfeld is a man who backs words with deeds. On 7 January, when the players reported back for training after the Christmas break, the Bayern boss announced his intention to introduce a code of conduct for the squad. Some four weeks later, the plan came to fruition when the club, the players and the coach endorsed the new code on Wednesday.

“The idea is to give the players orientation and guidelines as to their behaviour,” Hitzfeld explained, distributing the document in written form to every member of the squad. The code covers relations within the dressing room, with the board and with the club, but also incorporates dealings with the media and public appearances both as a group and individually.

<b>There to help younger players</b>

Hitzfeld said the code of conduct had been formulated “together with the board. It should help younger players and players from abroad, who might not know very much about how we work and our philosophy at Bayern.“ The players had “warmly welcomed this initiative,” Hitzfeld reported.

Led by captain Oliver Kahn, the team had been actively involved in writing the code of conduct and made many suggestions for improvement, “so we have a document we can all call our own.“ The code exclusively covered conduct and was not a set of punishment guidelines, Hitzfeld insisted. “The overall purpose is to help Bayern succeed.“
