Bayern hit thirteen as Schweinsteiger returns

Postby FCBayernNews » Thu Jan 05, 2012 6:30 pm

The goals rained in and Bastian Schweinsteiger returned to action as Bayern made a winning start to 2012 in a 13-0 friendly win over Qatari second tier outfit SC Al-Sailiya at the Doha training camp on Thursday. Arjen Robben, Mario Gomez and Thomas Müller netted before half-time, before Ivica Olic hit five, Nils Petersen and Franck Ribéry claimed a brace apiece, and Diego Contento scored another in a one-sided second period.

The side sent out by Jupp Heynckes to start the warm-up match bore a strong whiff of the potential line-up for the Bundesliga restart fixture away to Borussia Mönchengladbach on 20 January. Manuel Neuer kept goal behind a back four of Jérôme Boateng, Daniel van Buyten, Holger Badstuber and Philipp Lahm. In central midfield, Anatoliy Tymoshchuk partnered Schweinsteiger, taking part in a competitive match for the first time since breaking a collarbone two months ago. Robben, Müller, Toni Kroos and Gomez took up the attacking positions. Heynckes swapped all eleven of his players at half-time, with Ribéry arguably the biggest name in the second-half line-up.

Supported by a knot of happily noisy FCB fans, the men from Munich made heavy weather of the first half-hour against the local team coached by former Germany international Uli Stielike. The intense training sessions of recent days had clearly left their mark, although there were moments of footballing class too, and Schweinsteiger gave no hint of his lengthy absence with injury.

The Bavarians were a shade careless with their chances, until Robben's 36th-minute opener from a Lahm pass broke the deadlock. A minute later, Gomez converted a superb Kroos delivery, before Müller accepted Robben's assist to make it three on the stroke of half-time.

Remarkable Ribéry

The FCB team from the first 45 minutes now warmed down on an adjacent pitch as eleven fresh players took to the field for the second period. Ribery caught the eye and dazzled the local onlookers with an entertaining and skilful display down the left flank, although the fourth and fifth goals were put away by Olic from a header and Petersen with a low drive from Ribéry's lay-off.

The Bundesliga pros now hit their stride against the tiring part-timers and the goals quickly followed. Olic finished with a confidence-boosting five-goal haul, with the outstanding Ribéry adding two of his own, setting the seal on an enjoyable and worthwhile friendly run-out.
