Bayern handed tough trip to Gladbach

Postby FCBayernNews » Sun Feb 12, 2012 12:20 am

Bayern have been handed a challenging trip to Borussia Mönchengladbach in the DFB Cup semi-finals on 20 or 21 March, following Saturday evening's draw for the last four of the domestic knockout competition. It is far from the easiest match-up for the 15-time winners, who lost 3-1 at Borussia Park a few weeks ago to the side currently lying third in the Bundesliga. In the second semi-final, underdogs Greuther Fürth entertain Borussia Dortmund.

FCB and the side from near the Dutch border in the far west of Germany have previously met five times in the DFB Cup, with the men from Munich boasting an unblemished record: the Bavarians have triumphed on all five occasions, although almost all the ties were close-fought affairs.

One of these was the final in 1983/84 at the Waldstadion in Frankfurt, when Munich won 8-7 on penalties to claim the trophy for the seventh time. The match has gone down in German footballing lore after Lothar Matthäus missed the decisive penalty for Gladbach with his final competitive kick for the club before joining Bayern. The teams met again in the following season's semi-finals, FCB winning 1-0 in extra-time to claim a place in the final, where they fell to a shock defeat by Bayer Uerdingen.

The second round clash in 1987/88 was also a tight encounter: the first meeting in Mönchengladbach ended 2-2 after extra-time, before Munich finally prevailed 3-2 in a replay at the Olympic Stadium, also after an additional 30 minutes. At the same stage of the competition in 1996/97, Bayern progressed to the next stage with a 2-1 victory at Gladbach's previous ground, the venerable Bökelberg stadium. The most recent cup clash between the sides took place some four and a half years ago, Munich winning 3-1 in front of their home crowd, again in the second round.
