Bayern claim third spot in LIGA total! Cup

Postby FCBayernNews » Wed Jul 20, 2011 7:40 pm

New signings Rafinha and Takashi Usami both started in Wednesday's LIGA total! Cup third-place play-off between Bayern and Bundesliga rivals Mainz, which the men from Munich finally won on penalties after the sporadically entertaining hour-long contest ended 2-2.

The 33,500 capacity crowd at the freshly inaugurated Coface Arena in Mainz saw Nikolce Noveski head the hosts in front after 11 minutes, but Munich finished the first period strongly and David Alaba deservedly equalised on the stroke of half-time.

Mainz twice struck the goal frame as FCB wobbled slightly after the break, but late sub Thomas Müller won a crucial penalty and Nils Petersen stroked home three minutes from the end, only for Anthony Ujah to level with seconds remaining. The match went to a shoot-out, Danijel Pranjic netting the decisive spot-kick as the Bavarians claimed third spot 5-4 on penalties.

For the second of FCB's two matches at the tournament, Jupp Heynckes made a total of nine changes compared to the side beaten by Hamburg, retaining only Manuel Neuer in goal and Holger Badstuber at centre-half from the night before.

Rafinha, Anatoliy Tymoshchuk and Diego Contento completed the back four, with Alaba and Pranjic in defensive midfield, Usami and Ivica Olic out wide, and Toni Kroos in behind lone striker Petersen.

With Mainz boss Thomas Tuchel also making nine changes to the team which lost 1-0 to Dortmund on Tuesday, the opening exchanges were long on pace but short on precision, with FCB seeing much more of the ball and Mainz content to let the Bavarians come at them.

Unfortunately, and just like in the previous day's match, the first effort remotely near Neuer's goal resulted in FCB falling behind. Noveski had all the time in the world to flick his header into the net from a corner after Badstuber inadvertently impeded the Macedonian's marker Tymoshchuk.

Marcel Risse drew a routine save from Neuer as FCB regrouped, but the tide turned after Petersen powered a header just wide from Rafinha's lob and Pranjic brought a fisted save from Mainz keeper Christian Wetklo with a well-aimed 25-yarder.

Heynckes' men kept up the pressure as the half drew to a close, Wetklo booting Badstuber's cross-cum-shot out of the danger zone and saving Olic's close-range drive, but the equaliser finally arrived when Alaba met Contento's curling cross with a firm header in the last move of the first period.

Action at both ends

Luiz Gustavo took over from Badstuber for the second half, but there was an early let-off for the men in red when Nigerian hitman Ujah hit the outside of the post with a header, before Olic directed a headed effort of his own too close to Wetklo.

Usami skilfully released Rafinha only for the Brazilian's cross to find no taker, but at the other end Neuer yelled angrily at his defenders after an Elkin Soto free-kick passed through the FCB wall and grazed the outside of the upright.

Thomas Müller replaced Usami for the last ten minutes, and the Germany international won a penalty four minutes from the end after haring clear on the break and being upended in the box by Noveski. Petersen coolly netted from the spot and looked to have won it, only for Mainz sub Petar Sliskovic to feed Ujah and set up a last-minute equaliser.

Neuer and Wetklo each saved a spot-kick in the ensuing shoot-out, before Ujah placed his penalty against the bar and Pranjic comfortably netted his to wrap up the victory.

Then again, go one more season back. We finished 3rd and lost against Hamburg (I think it was LVG's first game), but went on to win the Audi Cup (which we play again this year) and almost won the treble.
