Bayern aim to topple leaders Nuremberg

Postby FCBayernNews » Thu Aug 31, 2006 1:30 pm

25.08.2006 <div class="abstand_unten_20"> </div> History-rich Bavarian neighbours Bayern and Nuremberg have met 173 times in the past, but the long-standing rivals have only once before crossed swords in the circumstances which surround the latest clash at the Allianz Arena on Saturday (<b>Live in English from 3.15 pm on Web Radio</b>). Nuremberg, commonly known by their simple nickname "Club", travel to the state capital as league leaders, but the champions determined to rectify the situation and leapfrog into first place.

"After our defeat in Barcelona, it's time for us to prove we're not a bad side. I want us to record a clear-cut victory," Bayern coach Felix Magath announced, although he warned his players to beware their on-song opponents: "It'll be a tough match. Nuremberg are in good shape and have nothing to lose."

<b>Reds aim for victory</b>

Back in 1967-8, Nuremberg arrived in Munich as leaders, came away with a 2-0 victory, and finished up with the most recent championship in their history. Times have changed: Nuremberg last won in Munich 14 years ago, a record the double winners are keen to maintain. "We're at home, and we have to show them who's boss," Roque Santa Cruz declared.

Bayern certainly need to make amends for a somewhat embarrassing 4-0 defeat in Barcelona last Tuesday. "That result means we have to restore our supporters' faith," Magath observed, promising to field an attacking formation on Saturday: "We'll be looking to get forward against Nuremberg."

<b>Poldi to start?</b>

Star signing Lukas Podolski is in line for a first start since joining the club. "He's improved with every game he's played, so his chances have increased," Magath confirmed, adding that he would only field Podolski as an out-and-out striker alongside Roy Makaay rather than potentially playing him in midfield.

Owen Hargreaves, missing from the trips to Bochum and Barcelona with flu, returns to contention. "He made a good impression in training. Owen was very determined," the coach reported. Magath also felt Lucio, forced to break off the session on Thursday, "should be available."

<b>Nuremberg raring to go</b>

Iconic Nuremberg boss Hans Meyer will send out close to a full-strength side. The only confirmed absentee is Robert Vittek, but Czech midfielder Tomas Galasek has been passed fit after suffering concussion in a 1-0 victory over Monchengladbach last Friday.

The sprightly 63-year-old Meyer admitted he was excited at the prospect of the clash in Munich. "People are taking this derby a little more seriously than normal, which is a tribute to the way my lads have played so far. If I was still playing, I couldn't imagine anything better than travelling to Munich with six points from two matches."

<b>Makaay: We'll win</b>

Makaay, with two goals to his name from the first two matches, begged to differ. "Nuremberg have always been difficult for us. They have nothing to lose, and they'll give it their best shot," the 31-year-old conceded, although he argued there could only be one winner on Saturday. "It would be good for everyone here if we went into the break for internationals and the Cup on nine points."

<b>Probable line-ups:</b>

<b>Bayern Munich:</b> Kahn - Sagnol, Lucio, Van Buyten, Lahm - Hargreaves, Demichelis, Ottl, Schweinsteiger - Makaay, Podolski
<b>Also in matchday squad:</b> Rensing, Scholl, Salihamidzic, Karimi, Pizarro, Santa Cruz, Dos Santos, Fürstner

<b>Nuremberg:</b> Schäfer - Reinhardt, Nikl, Glauber, Kristiansen - Galasek - Polak, Mnari, Banovic - Schroth, Saenko

<b>Referee:</b> Torsten Kinhöfer (Herne)

<b>Bayern's Bundesliga record in the fixture:</b> P23 W17 D3 L3 F48 A18
