Bastian Schweinsteiger announces retirement

Postby FCBayernNews » Tue Oct 08, 2019 4:50 pm

Thank you, 'football god'! A legend hangs up his boots. After around 17 years as a professional, Bastian Schweinsteiger announced his retirement on Tuesday at the age of 35. The midfielder’s decision comes after his current club Chicago Fire missed out on this year’s MLS Playoffs.

“The time has come: I will end my career at the end of this season,” confirmed the long-time Bayern player, who also thanked his fans and of course his family and wife Ana Ivanović for their support during his illustrious career. Schweinsteiger is now looking forward to what lies ahead and promised: “I will stay loyal to football!”

Crowd favourite Schweinsteiger joined the German record champions as a youngster in 1998 and made his senior debut four years later. By the time he moved to Manchester United in 2015, he’d made 500 appearances in all competitions for Bayern, scoring 68 goals and collecting more than 20 trophies – including the treble in 2013. Schweinsteiger also made 121 appearances for Germany (24 goals) and was part of the 2014 World Cup-winning team in Brazil.
