Altintop faces long lay-off after knee op

With three matches still remaining before the winter break, Bayern have suffered another injury setback on the news that midfield ace Hamit Altintop underwent surgery in Augsburg on Tuesday to repair a damaged meniscus in his right knee. The Bundesliga leaders will be without the utility man for the matches against MSV Duisburg, Hertha BSC Berlin and Aris Salonika. However, the Turkey international is expected to recover fitness in time to report back on schedule for winter training in January 2008.

Altintop, the only player to appear in all the club’s 22 competitive matches so far this term, joins an absentee list also definitely including Marcell Jansen (ligaments) and Lucio (suspended for two further Bundesliga matches). On the other hand, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Willy Sagnol could yet feature in the matches remaining before Christmas. Schweinsteiger has more or less shaken off a problem with an inflamed knee, but assistant coach Michael Henke has advised that the staff would “wait and see whether there’s a reaction.” Sagnol bruised a calf in training last week.
