Alaba and Petersen on target in warm-up win

Postby FCBayernNews » Thu Jul 14, 2011 8:00 pm

Bayern maintained their 100 percent record in pre-season warm-up matches with a 2-0 victory away to third division Carl Zeiss Jena on Thursday evening, continuing where they left off in a 15-0 romp against a regional XI and a 4-2 victory over Qatar at the Trentino training camp. FCB dominated the latest friendly from the start, but were forced to wait until after half-time for the match-winning goals.

A capacity 12,641 crowd at Ernst-Abbe-Sportfeld saw sub David Alaba open the scoring nine minutes into the second period, before Nils Petersen, who made his debut as a pro with Carl Zeiss in 2007, added the second with 20 minutes to go.

FCB at full strength

Coach Jupp Heynckes treated the Jena crowd to a full-strength line-up, with Manuel Neuer in goal, Rafinha, Holger Badstuber, Daniel van Buyten and skipper Philipp Lahm in the back four, and Bastian Schweinsteiger alongside Luiz Gustavo in twin holding roles.

Franck Ribéry and Arjen Robben took up station on the left and right, with Thomas Müller in behind lone striker Mario Gomez. Jörg Butt and Breno were the only senior players not to make the trip to Jena, who started with former Bundesliga star Jan Simak in midfield.

The visitors clearly meant business on the night and penned the lower league side back in their own half from the start. Robben came close with a left-foot effort after six minutes, but for all Munich's dominance, the nearest FCB came to a goal before the break was Ribéry's 36th-minute drive off the crossbar.

Alaba on target

As is normal in the summer warm-up matches, Heyckes made wholesale changes as the match went on, withdrawing Robben, Gomez and Müller at the break and sending on Alaba, Petersen and Toni Kroos. It was Austria international Alaba who broke Jena's resistance after 54 minutes, latching onto the lively Ribéry's assist from the left and poking the ball past keeper Tino Berbig.

In a remarkable incident shortly afterwards, Neuer came within a hair's breadth of doubling the lead with a mighty downfield clearance that appeared goalbound, until Jena substitute keeper Siefkes intervened with a fine save, finger-tipping the ball over his own crossbar. However, even the agile Siefkes was powerless to stop summer signing Petersen stabbing home a loose ball from a corner to round off the scoring after 70 minutes.

Nerlinger accepts generous donation

The match was staged as a benefit, providing much-needed revenue for financially-stricken Carl Zeiss. "Naturally, we're delighted and grateful to Bayern for coming to us and helping us along the path to consolidating our finances," commented Jena President Rainer Zipfel.

By way of thanks, Zipfel presented Bayern director of sport Christian Nerlinger with a bouquet before kick-off, and also a cheque for €1000 to be donated to the Munich-based Dominik Brunner Foundation.

The two outstanding players and the ones to have profited most from these pre-season friendlies in my opinion. Alaba's future doesn't lie on the left-wing, but he seems to be doing a fine job out there. Played very well there for Austria against Germany too. And Petersen is your typical goalscorer, at the right place at the right time.
