A first for Paderborn – Routine for Bayern

Postby FCBayernNews » Mon Feb 05, 2018 7:10 pm

While third division SC Paderborn are in the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup for the first time in the club’s history, FC Bayern are regular participants in the last eight of the domestic cup competition. Since 1996, the record champions have only failed to make the quarter-finals twice and in the last eight seasons have always made the last four. fcbayern.com brings you facts and stats on the DFB Cup quarter-final tie.

Only cup meeting back in 2001

Tuesday will only be the second time SC Paderborn and FC Bayern have met in the DFB Cup. The previous encounter came in the first round in 2001/02 when FCB registered a convincing 5-1 victory with goals from Carsten Jancker, Roque Santa Cruz, Alexander Zickler (2) and Niko Kovac. The two clubs’ sporting directors Hasan Salihamidzic and Markus Krösche were on opposite sides in that match.

Clash of league leaders

The tie between FCB and SCP is a meeting of league leaders in the first and third divisions. A curious coincidence: the last league leaders in the Bundesliga FC Bayern had to face were Paderborn. In September 2014 the Reds posted a convincing 4-1 win in their home game against the newly-promoted high-fliers.

Bayern on verge of 25th straight away win

FC Bayern travel to Paderborn for the cup game on the back of an impressive run. The record champions have won their last 24 away games in the DFB Cup and have extended the record in this competition (21 wins in 90 minutes and three on penalties). The last away defeat was a 4-2 reverse at Bayer Leverkusen in March 2009.

Heynckes celebrates debut

A first for Jupp Heynckes: In his long career as a coach, the 72-year-old will face Paderborn for the first time on Tuesday. His opposite number Steffen Baumgart also comes up against FC Bayern for the first time as a coach. As a player, Baumgart had wide experience of FCB in 16 competitive meetings with Rostock, Wolfsburg and Cottbus. His record: three wins, one draw and 12 defeats.

Schmidt takes charge

Tuesday night's cup game at Paderborn will be refereed by Markus Schmidt. It will be the second time this season the 44-year-old referee from Stuttgart has officiated a match involving FC Bayern after he was in charge for the 3-0 home win in the Bundesliga against FC Augsburg. Christof Günsch and Frederick Assmuth are the assistant referees and the fourth official is Guido Kleve.
