2016: Bayern beat Juve thanks to mia san mia spirit

Postby FCBayernNews » Mon Mar 16, 2020 6:10 pm

Bayern staged a comeback from two goals down, levelling the scores in injury time before sending the fans into raptures in extra time: FC Bayern showed great willpower when they beat Juventus exactly four years ago. It was a demonstration of the German record champions' never-ending morale and the "keep going" mentality.

Bayern were in ecstasy after turning the tide.

Juventus turned in a strong performance in the Champions League last sixteen return leg on 16 March 2016, but Bayern mounted an impressive comeback and turned the tide in extra time. Karl-Heinz Rummenigge expressed the fans' emotions when he commented: "These are heart-stopping matches."

The emotional evening against Juventus in pictures:

Strong performance in first leg

Bayern were in a decent position after the first leg. The first match ended in a 2-2 draw on the road, although FCB squandered a two-goal lead. It was the other way around in the return leg. At first it looked like a perfect evening for the Italian side at the sold-out Allianz Arena. There was no sign of a celebration for Bayern.

A team of great willpower: (back row, left to right) David Alaba, Manuel Neuer, Xabi Alonso, Robert Lewandowski, Medhi Benatia, Arturo Vidal; (front row) Douglas Costa, Philipp Lahm, Franck Ribéry, Thomas Müller, Joshua Kimmich.

Reds squander promising position

Paul Pogba handed Juventus the lead after five minutes, Juan Cuadrado doubling their advantage in the 28th minute. "We knew it would have been over if we'd conceded a third goal," said captain Philipp Lahm. But Manuel Neuer denied further goals with extraordinary saves.

Ex-Juventus pros as key players

Bayern showed their true colours in the second half. "Everyone saw what we're capable of then," Neuer commented after the final whistle. Lead by midfield engine and ex-Juventus pro Arturo Vidal, Munich slowly but surely clawed their way back. Coach Pep Guardiola's decisions paid off. None other than Kingsley Coman, who had joined Bayern from Juventus at the beginning of the season, was one of the key players after coming on as a sub.

Lewandowski breaks the deadlock

Robert Lewandowski pulled one back with a fine header.

Robert Lewandowski pulled one back for Bayern in the 73rd minute, and everyone knew giving up was out of the question for the five-time Champions League winners. The home side let off fireworks, with the fans on tenterhooks until the end. Coman's pinpoint cross found Thomas Müller in the box in injury time. The latter left netminder Gianluigi Buffon powerless, sending the fans into raptures: Bayern had levelled the scores to send the game into extra time.

Thomas Müller's headed goal in injury time sent the match into extra time: Bayern hit the roof.

Crucial subs

But Bayern weren't finished after the equaliser, going full throttle. Guardiola played his final card and it paid off once again. He introduced Thiago, who decided the match in the 108th minute, when he evaded his markers thanks to a fine one-two with Müller and handed Bayern the lead. Players and fans were ecstatic.

Pinpoint: Thiago's fine curler.

Coman rounds it off

Coman rounded off the scoreline when he crowned a counter two minutes later. Juventus failed to bounce back, and Munich enjoyed an "incredible evening," as Lahm said after the match.

Man of the Match: Sub Kingsley Coman set up Bayern's second goal and rounded off the 4-2 scoreline in extra time.
