100th clash on final matchday

Postby FCBayernNews » Sat May 12, 2018 9:05 am

The 28th domestic championship is already in the bag and will be celebrated at the Allianz Arena on Saturday, after the final Bundesliga game of the season against VfB Stuttgart. The clash will make for a special occasion, with the two biggest teams from southern Germany meeting for the 100th time. The record champions have mostly come out on top, recording a total of 62 wins to 17 defeats and sharing the points with Stuttgart on 20 occasions. The game on Matchday 34 also provides us with plenty more fascinating facts and figures:

Near record-breaking winning streak

FC Bayern have beaten Stuttgart 16 times in a row! Bayern themselves are the reason this isn’t a record, as Thomas Müller and his team-mates have also won their last 17 competitive matches against Werder Bremen. No other club has managed that since the inception of the Bundesliga in 1963. The last time Bayern failed to beat Stuttgart was eight years ago.

Unbeatable at home

The record champions could finish the season unbeaten at home in the Bundesliga for the second time in a row, and in doing so would extend what is already a strong run of 38 domestic league matches without defeat. Bayern managed to remain unbeaten for longer than that on just one occasion, between 1979 and 1982, when they avoided defeat in a total of 43 top-flight matches in a row.

Successful conclusions to a season

In recent years, the final day of the season always provided Bayern with a reason to celebrate, with the last 11 games on Matchday 34 going in their favour. The last time the record champions lost the final home game of a Bundesliga season was in 1983. Meanwhile, the fact that this year’s final match is, once again, against VfB Stuttgart is no longer a rarity. In five of the last 14 seasons, the teams have clashed on the final matchday, with Bayern winning all five games.

Stegemann in charge

Sascha Stegemann will take charge of this year’s season finale between FC Bayern and VfB Stuttgart. It’ll be the 33-year-old referee’s fourth competitive match involving Munich this season, having already officiated in the wins against Mainz (4-0) and Wolfsburg (2-1), as well as the 2-1 DFB Cup success against Borussia Dortmund. Stegemann will be assisted by Christian Fischer and Mike Pickel, with Bibiana Steinhaus taking on fourth official duties.
