0-0 in the first leg - a dangerous result?

Postby FCBayernNews » Mon Mar 11, 2019 6:15 pm

Following the 0-0 draw at Anfield three weeks ago, FC Bayern will host Liverpool FC on Wednesday evening (9 pm CET) for the return leg in the Champions League Round of 16. James Rodríguez called the goalless draw in the first leg"a dangerous result", and a look back in history shows that the Colombian is not completely wrong. Following a scoreless away draw in the European Cup, the German record champions have progressed on three out of four occasions, but it was against the Reds, of all teams, that they didn't manage to in the 1981 competition after drawing 1-1 in the second leg. Along with this, fcbayern.com has put together many other interesting facts and figures surrounding this fixture.

FC Bayern are determined to avoid a premature exit in the Round of 16 and have been very successful in doing so in recent years. In the last seven seasons, the Reds have always progressed from the round - the last time FCB failed in this phase was in the 2010/11 season against Inter Milan. The last four home games in the Round of 16 have all been won by the Bavarians and they've also scored a lot of goals. The record books show a 21-3 goal tally for the German record champions in these four games.

Away from fortress Anfield, the Reds have experienced some problems in Europe's premier competition recently. Jürgen Klopp's team progressed from this year's group stage with nine points, all of which were won in front of the Kop. Away from home, Liverpool have lost their last four games in this competition (including last season), with the Englishmen even going down 2-0 to alleged underdogs Red Star Belgrade in the preliminary round. Only once in their successful European Cup history have Liverpool suffered a longer negative run of results: From April 1966 to November 1971 Liverpool actually lost five away games in a row - the fifth of which was on 3 November 1971 - a 3-1 defeat at FC Bayern...

The Bavarians remain undefeated on home turf in the last five clashes against English teams. Recently there were even four home wins in a row against teams from the so-called motherland of football. The last time the team from Munich lost was in the 2013/14 Champions League group phase, when they went down 3-2 against Manchester City.

The Italian Daniele Orsato will take charge of the game on Wednesday evening. So far, both Bayern and Liverpool have had good experiences with the 43-year-old referee, each winning both games they played under his direction. In April 2018, the German record champions won 2-1 in the Champions League quarter-finals at Sevilla and in this year's group stage enjoyed a 5-1 home win against Benfica. In last term's Champions League qualification, the Reds won 4-2 against Hoffenheim and were later victorious in the Round of 16 with a 5-0 victory at Porto. It'll be interesting to see who the referee brings more luck to this time round.
