I don't really have a position on abortion. It is a very complex ethical problem in my view, involving several contrasting rights.

Well there’s such a thing as secondhand smoking. I don’t think this is the case with most drugs.

A 17-year-old girl who was raped as a young child and felt she could no longer go on living has been legally euthanised at home with the help of an 'end-of-life clinic', the Daily Mail reports.

But other media are reporting that legal euthanasia was refused to her and she let herself die of thirst and hunger with the consent of her family.

Noa Pothoven died in a hospital bed in her living room. [source]

In Holland, children as young as 12 can be granted euthanasia if they desire, but only after a doctor concludes that the patient's suffering is unbearable with no clear end in sight.

SERIOUSLY ? What the **** is wrong with the Dutch savages..??? shame on this country..................
F uck all this
Not endorsing or condemning the above, but the Dutch are probably the single most developed and advanced society in the world. Kudos to them.

Sure....
Is cause they allow you to take drugs or cause they have red light districts ... or maybe cause they allow 12 yr olds to commit a legal suicide?

Nice forward ppl

Most probably the EU Pres post will go to the dangerous man called F.Timmermans...
As the two dictators decided so... (the merkel - macron axis)

This decision goes against the will of the majority of voted casted last May.

It had to be someone from the EPP (Weber) & not that pseudo socialist of Timmermans

Sure

Merkel is the dictator... Macron, who bends over every single time his already spoilt people demand something, is the dictator...

Do me a favor, if you don’t appreciate democracy get lost...

Weber is a tool and it was obvious from day 1 it would get difficult for him...

No, it is separate states that are anti-democratic. If democracy means that the people have the power to alter the future, whether in a good or bad way, then you as a Maltese person have much less democracy than an American, for example.

For example, take climate change. Even if literally every person in the world apart from those living in the US and China (and therefore every country apart from those 2) were to decide they wanted to end carbon emissions, it would be useless as long as the two biggest polluters carried on doing what they are doing. What kind of democracy is that, when a majority of 6 billion people is powerless to change the future?

In a globalised world where what happens in America affects Asia and vice versa, there is greater democracy in larger institutions, like the EU.

To be honest that argument really didn’t make much sense. The type of system you seem to be advocating will never work. Let’s consider the reverse. Let’s say Americans or Chinese are the majority. I doubt you’d submit to that world system.

You gonna honestly say you’d give in if the world majority demanded that you stop learning Maltese or submit to their religion? Go ahead and give in to an ISIS caliphate and live under their majority. Let’s be honest here, you are in favor of a world majority if you are in the majority and it forces others to submit to your world view.

I’m assuming you think sacrificing your nation to a unified Europe will get allow you to get your voice heard. Maybe it’s that’s so. But to be honest it seems more like you feel entitled to visit any country you wish and to impose your views on them. My question is why should I submit to that?

World News Thread

Postby FCBayernMunchen » Tue Jul 02, 2019 8:30 am

Those are valid concerns although I would hope that in such a world something like religion would not have anything to do with government and its powers. Obviously this isn’t something that’s going to happen tomorrow. :P

If the majority is not what I like there isn’t much I can do and I will have to settle for it, just like I already do in my country. But at least I would have had the power to change things with my vote had there been more people who agree with me.

I genuinely think that the global nature of today’s world and its issues mean that democracy is compromised with smaller structures. There are of course other problems with global or continental governments, but as far as we are talking about democracy philosophically and what gives the individual most power, I believe that is the way to go.

Let me give you a very silly example. I could decide to make my house an independent state believing I would be more free because why should my next door neighbour (or someone living on the other side of the country) decide what I do with and in my house? But if I do that and the neighbour (and his state) decided to double the height of his building and take away all my sunlight, or play very loud music until 4am, I would have no power to change that and the laws. So I might have more control over a small area of land but in practice my life would be worse off and my power diminished because I have no democratic say in something which directly affects me heavily. In the end, I’m not going to live my entire life in my house.

It’s a silly example but I think you can probably get what I’m trying to say, even if you disagree. I acknowledge that there are valid concerns especially with identity though.

Regarding your question, well, why would any American let people in other states decide for them? A Bavarian let people in Berlin? In the end you could have an ISIS caliphate majority in just Germany as well and legally you’d have to settle for that (or revolt, of course) - especially if you believe ramsej. :P With countries people already agreed to work together for the better good with people they don’t know and who live very far away and are very different from them. It’s just taking it to a larger scale.

Certainly at an EU level it can - and does - work if the US can work. The size and population are comparable.
