Today in History

Postby FCBayernMunchen » Fri Jun 07, 2019 9:20 am

It is probably mentioned in this book but one thing I learned from the other centenary book which is going to be published (the one I proofread) and which I had never heard before was that one of the reasons things escalated so much was that the events happened in 1919.

At the end of 2018 all the way until July 1919 the Egyptians were revolting against the British. Even more significantly, Ireland declared Independence in January 1919 m, starting a 3 year war and IRA terror attacks.

Because of these two main events the British (who at the time seem to still have been colonial-minded) were in a bit of a panic. There is a letter from, if I remember correctly the British Government of Malta to London, warning even before 7 June 1919 that unless he is given help and authority to change things quickly “we will have another Ireland on our hands”. I think it was mostly this fear which made the British troops shoot and kill unarmed protestors (who to be fair, were being violent and causing damage, burning down presses etc.). A similar firing on unarmed protesters had happened in Armitsar in India in April, probably for similar reasons.

In india... they killed over 400 ... firing indiscriminately at sheiks... for just doing their festival....

The Brits have a lot of blood on their hands but no one dares to complain cause that is only reserved for nazi germany...

Of course, like any coloniser after all.

It’s mportant to remember though it is usually the very few powerful people in comfortable houses and palaces who are to blame for that blood, and certainly not the soldiers or other people at large.

George Orwell has an interesting essay about how the tyrants are not themselves free because they become slaves to their own power and expectations of them... which leads to things like this. It’s called ‘On Shooting an Elephant’, I’m sure it’s online.

Schurrle with a brace ...

He would have had a hat trick had Mesut Oezil not been so selfish and passed the ball to the completely unmarked Schuerrle exactly before Brazil countered and scored their only goal.
