TIL that the house numbers in Malta were introduced during the 1813 plague.

This was done in order to have a better control over quarantine!

Those who breach the quarantine would have been sentenced to death!

Worth noting though that it was just that, quarantine for infected people and areas. The harbour area was isolated because it had high rates. The TVM article saying this was a lockdown like today’s is completely wrong. The idea of a lockdown, where you isolate people who are healthy, is a new thing.

Not sure .... I think they were referring to the Spanish flu pandemic though

In any case it is wrong, whenever it refers to. Restricting public gatherings and closing schools is one thing. Closing absolutely everything and telling everyone to stay home (in some countries ordered) is, as far as I know, completely unprecedented. That’s what a lockdown is. In the past we obviously took measures to avoid crowds and so on but there never was anything resembling a lockdown.

One of the most important beings out there. A couple of weeks ago while working I saw the biggest one I’ve ever seen resting on the insect screen on my window... easily more than 2 cm. I guess it must have been a wasp or hornet rather than a bee although I don’t know what the difference is.

Many US citizens are of German ancestry and although now they don't have ties with Germany, back then their many of their granparents still felt German and were supporting Germany when WWI started. Even among the most important families (eg. Goldman, Lehman, Sachs), there was some reluctancy towards the USA entering the war against Germany. Many US citizens of German ancestry tried to enlist in the German army and later on they were a significant share of the US population supporting neutrality.

So yeah, no wonder there were still 20k or 30k who were supporting the third reich. Remember that no one knew about the holocaust outside Germany.

No it was male ... baghal.
Also learned that the males are not even able to eat on their own... they are fed by the females.
They are just used to procreate.
Also the venom costs three times as much as gold... it is being used as a medical treatment for arthritis
