Yes, got to Rome yesterday evening and spent most of today in Vatican City. Beyond exceeded all my expectations. I think today was genuinely one of the best days of my life.

Although I'm not religious I love visiting cathedrals and churches for the art and architecture, and I must admit I believe I've seen nicer than St Peter's Basilica (although it's definitely up there with the best). The neverending Vatican Museums though are a dream. Shame they're mostly pagan. :P

Very first map I came across in the magnificent Hall of Geographic Maps, right by the entrance. :)

St Paul's Catacombs, also underground in Rabat. These were used as burial grounds for pagans (Phoenicians and Romans, Jews, and Christians, indiscriminately) for around 1000 years, from c. 400 BC (possibly as far back as 700 BC) until around 700 AD.

While in here all the lights suddenly went off and I ended up in pitch darkness in the middle of an underground necropolis (it was just me and a friend)... Luckily the fabled school class which is said to have disappeared there many years ago did not show up.

Yep but that fake legend also says there's a whole network of underground passages under Malta

Hmmm. I've heard the story before but I'm not sure where it was. BUT it was written down on one of the Heritage Malta signs at the Catacombs.

Yes to both. I only went to the shelters and the grotto, not the museum because I didn't think I would have time to do everything else otherwise. Probably would have managed, but oh well.

I went down that shelter in '99 with my history class.
At the time the guide told us that most of it was not explored... he added that it goes as far as the Nigret area (close to the Seminary School)
