The frustration thread

Well, we should have three primary sources of energy:
1) Private renewable energy (mainly solar), which is connected to the national grid.
2) An interconnector supplying energy from Sicily, opened some 6 years ago.
3) A recently built power station.

Now, the third one was the major premise of the government’s manifesto when it first got elected in 2013. They argued it will do everything from improve health to reducing electricity prices to making sure we have no more blackouts because we won’t depend only on the interconnector, which the incumbent government said was enough.

Now, the power station deal is massively shady, with quite well-founded allegations of kickbacks to major government officials worth €5,000 each a day, one if its directors charged with the assassination of the government’s biggest critic, and that same director gifting expensive presents to the Prime Minister and generally being good friends with him and other government officials.

The official explanation for these blackouts, at a time when consumption is at its lowest for the year, is that bad weather damaged the interconnector. So if damage to the interconnector plunges the entire country in darkness 7 times (I think) in 3-4 weeks, we are bound to wonder what on earth they did with that power station that was meant to make sure we don’t depend only on the other sources. Does it serve any purpose other than them stealing millions off us?

The government certainly has a lot to answer for, ramsej is right.

So energy is only privatized in the renewable sector in Malta?

Sort of. I don’t remember well but I think the national energy corportation was partly privatised. It’s a monopoly though, which kind of makes sense given the islands’ size.

The thing is though that even renewable energy isn’t used by those who produce it but is just connected to the national grid. For instance, we have had solar panels at home for a few years and given how sunny Malta usually is, we produce more than we consume (i.e. not only don’t we pay anything for electricity, but the government actually pays us). However because we can’t use the energy we produce ourselves these blackouts still affect us, even though our devices are producing enough to keep our household fully running whatever happens with the interconnector and power station etc.

Eeeee ollleeee

Malta's power link to Sicily could be out of action for months after damage

Back-up plan to cost €150,000 a day to ensure electricity keeps flowing

EDIT

I just experienced a dimming ... (a one sec power cut) the ones that cause damage the most
