Now that I think about it though I can’t think of any foreign town/city other than The Hague which takes an article:
Ruma
Milan
Pariġi
Londra
Madrid
Barċellona
and The Hague/L-Aja

FCBayernMunchen wrote:Don’t think there’s any reason tbh, but if there is I don’t know it. It’s just the way things are and it’s one of those things which will confuse foreign learners, because it’s not a rule as such and it’s very arbitrary whether the place takes an article or not.

So you have Il-Marsa (article) but then Marsaxlokk, Marsaskala, and Marsalforn (no article). Il-Birgu, L-Isla but then Birżebbuġa, Buġibba, Birkirkara. I’m actually not too sure about Bormla. It’s definitely used without an article but to my mind it doesn’t sound as weird as all the others if you add an article either.

Then there’s all the Ħal places too. That’s not an article.

The same is true for countries:
L-Italja
Il-Ġermanja
L-Ingilterra
Il-Kanada
L-Awstralja
Is-Sirja
Iċ-Ċina
It-Turkija
Il-Messiku
Iż-Żimbabwe
and most other countries in the world.

But then:
Franza
Spanja
Ċipru
and of course, Malta u Għawdex.
And when you hear them without the article they sound tal pepe'

Fejn toqghod ? - Sliema.... Swieqi.... Naxxar or St Paul of the steps

The ones with San do not take either.

The other Foreigne Towns in Maltese don't take either...

Don't get your last two comments (foreign towns and football clubs). We also put articles in front of clubs: Il-Bayern, l-Inter, ir-Real...

Maltese.

yest I was wondering about the terms ;; ta'bic cajt and ta'parsi when we refer to something which is fake... I was telling to myself that both phrases make zero sense... isn't there another option for both?

I think the reason they don't make sense may be that you've written them incorrectly:
ta' biċ-ċajt: you do hear this a lot but it's actually either "biċ-ċajt" (jokingly) or "taċ-ċajt" (ridiculous, unfair, deceptive etc.). In the latter case, except for "ridiculous", it might not make obvious sense but there is a clear link between the meaning of the words and what is being conveyed and I think it's a beautiful phrase.

ta' parsi is spelt taparsi. It's one word. I have no idea what its etymology is (remember, I work with languages and have a big interest in Maltese but my speciality as a linguist is English not Maltese) but probably it has nothing to do with ta', and the fact that it starts with ta- is coincidental. In this case I don't see why it wouldn't make sense.

you are right - it is taparsi ... it prob derives from a Sicilian word.

Should be "Agħfas", but that's a minor mistake compared to some of the stuff you see out there (even on signs). Not sure if I'm missing something else too.

It is quite a big one if you ask me...
The way it is written it changes the whole meaning.

Question for Germans: is there a known historical reason or explanation why you write all nouns in capital letters?

I don’t know exactly...

Taking a wild guess, the German word for noun, "Nomen" is Latin for "name"... I would assume this therefore carried over into German but not into English...
