What a shame... the first two... as the one of Dwejra is a natural phenomenon.

To be fair only the gate was intentional... the horrific "rebuilding" of the theatre is ugly but the original opera house was bombed in WW2 (for anyone who might be interested... I'm sure ramsej knows that already :P ).

Tue 7th April 1942, people died in there... I am sure that it was bombed by mistake (unlike the Circus in Dresden)
The German Govt. wanted to finance the rebuilding of the Great Opera House in the 1950s but a so intelligent Workers union refused as they were afraid that the works will be carried out by the Germans and not by the locals

What a shame... it would easily be one of the most impressive buildings in Valletta, and that's saying something.

It was the only thing that the Brits did right during their 164 years stay...

Did you know that it might have been cursed?

There were two occasions when a fire broke out into the theater.

The Manoel (named after GM de Vilhena) was our only one on the isl and after the Royal Op was build the Manoel was left unused.

The rest is history

Did not know that but fires were very common in theatres in the past.

Regarding the only thing comment: was it the British who introduced compulsory education or was it Napoleon?

Napoleon...

But it was the 19th Cent ... I mean it was not in the remote past... although candles were part and parcel still right?

The Brits destroyed our Med Culture ... in all aspects, food, language, architecture etc.
They destroyed historical buildings from the Knights era put on all their lovely wall paper on beutiful frescoes in our palaces...
But the Maltese workers knew that this was a big sin so what they did first was to put papers over the frescoes to protect it from the wall paper...

Electricity wasn't so sophisticated though. Stuff like short circuits happened... and candles and so on could still be part of the show itself. Apart from the curtains many theatres were made of wood across Europe (don't think it's the case in Malta) so they were very susceptible to fire.

P.S. I have no doubt the Maltese at the time would have believed it was cursed though. I wonder how we compare on the superstitious scale to other countries.

from the stats the bayern site shares show that they are superstitious as well.
However I believe the med cultures are the most superstitious of all.
