The feast of Imnarja, goes back many centuries, well before the arrival of the Knights of St John in 1530. Way back, the Romans used to celebrate a pagan feast called luminaria, from which was derived the Maltese word "Imnarja". Luminaria (lights) comes from the practice on the eve of the feast when people would burn fiaccoli and fires on the bastion walls and roof of the Mdina Cathedral which celebrated the solemn feast of St. Peter and St. Paul, who are the light of the church. [source]

I really like today's holiday. To me it's very much associated with the kind of forest feast and music you read about in fantasy stories (like the Elves in Lord of the Rings, for example).

I always wished to go to Buskett on the eve (yest)
In older times, all newly weds had to go the feast - it was like a sort of promise

Education Commissioner warns of ‘ethnic gangs’ forming in school

This was complicated by the fact that some foreign students cannot even speak or understand Maltese or English with an intermediate proficiency.

The language barrier instinctively leads such students into seeking the company of peers from their own country

the report continues, and the more students from that particularly country, the larger and more powerful the gang will be. Students’ fraught social backgrounds was another factor identified by the Education Commissioner behind the formation of such gangs.

Mr Caruana Carabez said the troublesome foreign students seem to come from war-torn countries, and may have been brutalised by being exposed to violence at an early age.

see the comments.

It's the kind of article that right-wing racists would open up with anger and spew their hatred in the comments section, while the rest of the country reads the headline and says "yeah... so?" and moves on to something more interesting. Therefore, one would need to be a fool to think that the comments in that article would be a good representation of the opinions of the whole of Malta.

Anyway, Muscat had already claimed his plans are for Malta to become metropolitan. Therefore, we should compare the demographics not to other countries but to specific cities, where typically the number of foreigners will be higher. For example, as long ago as December 2005, the number of foreigners living in Munich was 23.3% which is almost 1 in 4. Pretty sure that number is higher nowadays, 14 years later.

You're barking up the wrong tree given I'm an environmentalist, but this is the direction this country has taken, love it or hate it.
