On Facebook Andre Schembri is saying the same thing and frankly to me it’s a reminder of the level of intelligence most footballers have.

They want to put it as some kind of betrayal to the country and the national team. Why the fuck should we care? What possible benefit does the club stand to gain by loaning a player (who plays practically 90 minutes every game) for free? And if he gets injured? If they decide not to buy?

The MFA and Andre Schembri want clubs to be nurseries for the national team. They’re crazy. What’s the point, so we concede 4 instead of 5 against any team better than Liechtenstein?

It says a lot about how much we value our players when there is uproar over us demanding 50k from a club who, FFS, made it out of the Europa League group stage and will be playing Tottenham in a couple of weeks.

If we want to improve Maltese football (including the national team) the solution sure as hell isn’t sending every player with a fraction of interest from a foreign club away for free, especially one where he would likely stay on the bench. And then we complain that Maltese clubs can’t afford to pay players decent wages so they can turn professional, lol. I guess the MFA is still run by idiots after all.
He’s at it again. Malta’s ex-captain has now gone on tv saying that if only Maltese clubs let players go to much richer clubs for FREE (reminder: he wants one of the best players in Malta who plays every game to spend 4 months on the bench abroad, because that is apparently better), we will qualify for the world cup.

What an idiot. He should have stuck to his fantastic (by Maltese standards) football skills instead of revealing his utter ignorance.

That's so short-sighted. With clubs losing out on good profits, they will not afford to invest in their nurseries, which in turn will have a negative effect on the national team.

Precisely one of the points I made in reply to the article on Facebook. If anything, what we need is clubs to be richer, so they can afford to pay footballers, even youngsters, decent salaries.

Our problem isn't population. While we do have a small population we have a VERY high percentage who train regularly as youngsters. But 90%+ of those quit in their mid-teens because of school and exams, and because there is no real economic prospect for them. Guarantee them a better wage, and I guarantee we will start to see better players come out of our ranks more regularly.

The other flaw with his (and the majority's) argument is that they believe training abroad (in the Austrian Bundesliga, in this case) will automatically make a player better even if he never plays a single minute. This is demonstrably not true. The world's top clubs consistently loan their players to much lower quality leagues and teams and the end result is generally that they develop more with match practice there than they do never playing but training with the world's best players in their parents clubs, which often means their development stops.

Have we stopped to consider that one of the reasons clubs like Bayern have been on top for decades is probably that these clubs have figured out the best practices? Why do we want to insist on reinventing the wheel and why are we so convinced that football's best practices do not apply to us? Does the U15 coach of a nobody team in Cyprus believe he knows better than the biggest names in football?

The Austrian Bundesliga's average Elo rating is higher than the Eredivisie or the Russian league. Not sure he's being practical.

The team he was going to join is one of their top ones. They are playing Spurs in the Europa League tomorrow. Some would have us believe (admittedly I haven’t heard Schembri express this) it’s a missed opportunity that he won’t get to play against Kane and Son tomorrow.

Btw, I know for a fact that the club only demanded 50k for him (a team in the Europa League gets more than per game!) and they’re being accused of being too greedy and ruining his chances...

You can be with girls who are 16-17 yo and you can be with all older girls and older women.

You can always do that - might just be frowned upon...

What can I do? Become 20-21 year old again or be with 16-17 yo girls without any consequences?
