I am very interested and curious to see what history do you cover ?

Like do you also teach European hist,? Or if not you can the students opt to ?

For example for my third year in secondary school I had chosen to learn history more in depth. Apart from Maltese hist (starting exactly from that aftermath of the Great Siege of 1565 until the Pre WW2 era) we covered European hist.... England, France, Spain, Astro Hungarian, Germany, Turkey and all what happened until the early 20th cent

In my case I never chose to study history in depth so all I did at school was Maltese history... and it wasn’t that great, to be honest. At a very young age, at primary school, we covered mostly Maltese prehistory, St Paul and the Christening of Malta, Napoleon’s couple of years here and Malta in World War II. I think we might have covered the Arabs and Normans, too, but I might be confusing it with secondary school. This is pretty much what I still know and remember, because it was taught well.

In the first two years of secondary school we covered every conquerer in Malta up to the Knights. However most of these were not addressed enough so they are a very confused blur in my head. In the last three years of secondary school, when I chose not to study history in depth, all we covered was basically what every single Grandmaster of the Knights of St John did and the various fortifications around Malta, and a brief history of the journey to independence/republic. As you might imagine this completely missed the point of what is important, and along with everyone else I have forgotten most of it.

Not sure what they teach these days but from examiners’ reports that made it to the media I think they address Malta joining the EU and since, too, which is better.

It’s for this reason that my knowledge of European and World History is very much limited to the UK/Ireland and the former Empire, and to some extent France, because I got most of it indirectly through literature. I actually just bought an introduction to world history which I’m very eager to read, but I am waiting for pen refills from the UK first to be able to annotate it.

It’s overall general European history mainly focusing on European influence in the world and German origins and later also history... So, for example, the Pacific theater is more if a side note when talking about WW2...
It’s more about understanding your future and presence through your past... Which is why your friends are wrong about blame or shot like that... I ALWAYS tell my students that they don’t have to be ashamed when dealing with the Holocaust... I always tell them it’s not about blame but about not making the same mistakes again...
