To be honest I don’t see why deaths should be used as a aay to judge the model. Surely we should be looking at the number of cases instead, to see whether lockdowns are in fact slowing it down?

Problem with case numbers is that they are entirely depending on the amount of testing done. They are completely incomparable across countries, as long as tests per 1m people vary by factors up to 600 percent. They're also incomparable over time within the same country for reasons of varying test capacities (capacities are build up, at the same time there are shortages of chemicals that slow testing down). The less you test, the less infections you find.
Everything you say is very true. Still, choosing not to impose a lockdown or strict measures would ostensibly have an effect on numbers, not on deaths. So let’s say hypothetically 9 out of 10 die in Sweden, it wouldn’t really say they were wrong not to follow other countries.

I think the ultimate figure for assessing the success of different strategies will be deaths per million people. Maybe with the qualification how many of them died because of a shortage of IC units.

Still that might be down more to failures of the healthcare system than social measures, though the two aren’t completely separate. I think it will be very difficult to ever compare unless there are clear, huge differences between the approaches.

They already have thrice the number of Corona deaths per million population than Germany, and they are three weeks behind us on the curve.

I think you’re neglecting, that the strategy should be decided upon WITH the number of ICU beds in mind...

Trumpland is not EU

@MUTU:

It’s because Italy was hit first and everyone closed borders instead of helping...
