Maybe if they were treated better in detention centres and actually respected as human beings who deserve not to be in overcrowded places at this time, they would have less motivation to run away.

Judging by conditions in the same centres in Malta here.

IMO that comparison is BS. What's the point of saying "it would be 56,000 cases in China?" We know that China is not in a bad state so what even is the point? If anything, they should take a country we all agree is in a bad state, like the USA, and see how our numbers compare.

The comparison is nonsensical to begin with though. They are not equivalent. The stats will always be skewed against smaller countries. This virus is very contagious. An infected person is likely to spread it to 2-3 people. So let's say one person gets infected in Malta, one gets infected in Italy, and one in China. They all give it to their families (3 other people) who are quarantined and do not spread it to anyone else. If I am calculating correctly this person would say that the Maltese cases are equivalent to 480 in Italy and 11,200 in China. That's BS. They are equivalent in terms of statistics but not in practical reality. Smaller populations will reach worse comparative levels quicker and automatically.

What the stat does tell us is what percentage of the population is infected, so how likely it is that you will meet someone infected. As long as there are quarantine measures and lockdowns, the comparison doesn't tell us anything useful. You see 1 case in Malta is always equivalent to 2,800 in China. There is no middle ground, whereas it is perfectly possible for China to have anywhere between 1 and 2799 caes.

The number that really is significant is that since last Saturday we've seen an increase of more than 1000% in active cases.

The number of new COVID-19 cases could be even higher than reported because of long waiting lists for testing, doctors’ association head Martin Balzan fears.

Patients, even those with novel coronavirus symptoms, who called to book a swab test on August 1 were given appointments for August 12. The virus takes about 14 days to pass, meaning the time spent waiting for testing is almost equivalent to the infectious period.

In comments to Times of Malta on Sunday, when 15 new cases were registered overnight, the Medical Association IF Malta’s head said the waiting lists were problematic because it could mean the numbers in the community were actually higher.

“We know there are long waiting lists and so we might actually be underestimating the problem,” Balzan said.

Nonetheless, individuals with symptoms told Times of Malta they were still made to wait until mid-August to get tested, even after informing the health authorities they were symptomatic.

What's the situation with medications and vaccines? Any news or reports about progress in research?

All I know I get from epidemiologists in Croatia and a Croatian molecular biologist Ivan Đikić who works at Frankfurt institute. It seems that everything is still in phase of getting familiar with the virus.

Very good observation
(MALTA)

Not necessary to be a rocket scientist to see where the spikes are coming from.
All popular holiday destinations show the same spikes because of:

1 - Tourists (who really don't care - because when they did they would not choose to travel in times like this)
2 - Young people from the country itself - They feel OK and it's party time - Those old people had enough time and now it's a new era

And about the tourists: I don't talk rubbish.... Talk with them and you will
They just have one fear and that is that they cannot enjoy 200% holiday. They don't fear Covid and when they feel a cough..... You really think they will stay in the hotel room 24/7? Dream ON! They don't care anything else then their own ''having a good time''.

And with autumn coming.... The party's will move to inside......
And the day after the Paceville Party people are serving you in the supermarket...

One thing though....

Developed in China and seems that it is the only one which is only to work ....

Food for thought

1 Create a virus.... check
2 Destroy the World economy... Check
3 buy ruined business around the world... check.
4 create a vaccine ... (almost there)
5 sell it to the whole world
