Goretzka is strong on the air, and skillful enough for the striker spot.

I also agree though, the skillset that Goretzka has makes him a better striker than Werner, IMHO. He has better finishing than the latter with his feet and he's much better in the air. He's also got the ball control.

Just for kicks, here are the FIFA 21 stats comparing Goretzka and Werner with striker-related attributes

Finishing: Werner 81, Goretzka 82
Heading Accuracy: Werner 76, Goretzka 86
Dribbling: Werner 84, Goretzka 84
Ball Control: Werner 85, Goretzka 87
Shot Power: Werner 85, Goretzka 85
Strength: Werner 65, Goretzka 88
Jumping: Werner 75, Goretzka 79
Long Shots: Werner 77, Goretzka 86
Acceleration: Werner 93, Goretzka 77
Sprint Speed: Werner 89, Goretzka 83
Agility: Werner 82, Goretzka 76
Composure: Werner 79, Goretzka 82

Basically Werner wins with regards to movement stats (which are technically more important if one is playing as a winger than centrally), but Goretzka wins at everything else, including shooting and heading.

Javi Martinez and Goretzka could have been like Klose and Luca Toni, yep.

Agreed.

Goretzka is a box to box midfielder. He's good at making runs into space. He can time those runs very well and on top of that he is very good at headers

But a striker has a completely different role. First of all, the striker in a 4-2-3-1 will most likely be double marked and oftentimes isolated. It's not easy to play like that and you can't just fit Hummels or Goretzka in there. You need someone who knows how to can hold up the ball, who can play with his back to goal. Someone who knows the basics of the striker position and knows how to position himself when in possession but also when the team losses the ball

I'm not Timo Werner's biggest fan and he is definitely one of the most frustrating players to watch. But don't forget that Timo Werner scored 28 goals in 34 matches in his last season in Bundesliga.

Yes, Goretzka is good at headers and overall he's got good first touch and finishing. But to me that's like saying "Usain Bolt would be a great winger because he is fast"

Goretzka is actually quite similar to Mario Gomez but with better ball control.
Werner is not a striker. Never was never will be. He's decent on the wings, but other than that he's not going to score you the goals with his mediocre finishing.

Agreed.

Also you make fun here but Goretzka has similar goals-per-game as Klose for Bayern, despite playing considerably less offensively.

Klose has 24 goals in 98 matches for Bayern (0.24 goals per match)
Goretzka has 19 goals in 81 matches for Bayern (0.23 goals per match)

Also, for the record I think Musiala would make a good striker too. In fact when he was younger I believe he used to play there.

Yeah sure, because Klose scored like 1 or 2 goals in his last season with us. He was horrible that year

In his last season in Bundsliga, Timo "can't score" Werner scored 28 goals in 34 games

Goretzka has scored 33 goals in 197

So far in his career Goretzka has played midfielder, left back and right back. Why do you think he has NEVER played as a striker under any of his multiple coaches?

Because he's needed in midfield. You know, the same as to why Kimmich is not played at RB. Or why Lewandowski would probably be a better winger than Coman.

I don’t think Goretzka would make a bad striker. Back when he struggled to get integrated at Bayern, when he used to have bad games but somehow score, and when we had no backup for Lewandowski, I often unironically suggested putting him there.

But obviously things have changed now and he’s established himself as one of the very best midfielders.
