Bastian Schweinsteiger and Lukas Podolski will be honoured with farewell matches after announcing their retirement from international duty, according to a statement by the German football federation, yesterday.
Schweinsteiger revealed his intention to end his international career after winning his 120th cap in Germany’s Euro 2016 semi-final defeat by France in July, and will have a final opportunity to say goodbye to supporters against Finland in Moenchengladbach on August 31.
Podolski announced that he no longer wanted to be considered for international selection in a post on his official Instagram account on Monday, although due to a ankle injury, the date of his farewell match has not yet been confirmed.
“I know it means a lot for them to play for Germany one more time,” coach Joachim Loew said.
“This proves how much the team meant and still means to them.”
Both players were part of Germany’s 2014 World Cup-winning squad. Podolski is Germany’s third most-capped player with 129 appearances.
Schweinsteiger has made 120. [source]

The future of the German NT: If you had to nominate a U25 squad (23 players, everyone who was born Jan 1st 1991 or later is eligible), who would be in?

Four players in the senior squad, we have none in the u21 and one in the u19 (Dorsch).

Mesut Özil will be Germany's new number 10 following Lukas Podolski's international retirement.

Basti's farewell game is vs Finland. But where is Poldi?

Btw Goetze is dealing with a thigh injury and probably won't be able to make it for these games.

Wo ist Mario bitte?

Hope he isn't injured as he's in my Fantasy BL 11.

Also this Mittelfeld/Angriff business needs to stop.

Seriously. Acting as if those players are separate from Manuel Neuer, who basically owns 60% of the pitch, is ridiculous.

Mahmoud Dahoud: what a great player! He will be making some noise in the next 2-3 years.
You may consider: Emre Can, Marc-André Ter Stegen, Serge Gnabry, Antonio Rüdiger, Christoph Kramer, Moritz Leitner, Patrick Herrmann, Jeremy Toljan........I am sure there is a few more with some history in the U teams or on the senior team radar.

If Joachim Low is still around don't rule out Louis Gabriel Podolski (who is 10 now) in a few years

He's 26 ;) ... I had to draw a line somewhere.

@Jorge
Yes, there are others, but a squad can only have 23 players and positions have to be balanced. Can't include 4 goalkeepers, and right now I rate those three over Ter Stegen (who IMO makes too many foolhardy decisions). Of course that might change.

Löw terminiert Kapitänsentscheidung [source]

The new captain will be known after the game against Finland... on Thursday.

According to sport1, Neuer and Boateng are top candidates to succeed Schweinsteiger.
