The referee would not 'challenge' the VAR and go and check the replay to 'see for himself'. Instead, whatever the VAR says is final. This would cut out the long delay where the referee is spoken to over an earpiece, then jogs over to a screen, check the replays the VAR team have to quickly conjure up (this was an epic fail in the DFB-Pokal final, for example) and finally take a decision.

The game would be fair and free-flowing.

Exactly. So many problems result from referees on the pitch not trusting the VAR referee and demanding to review everything themselves.

With such a system in place, VAR can be used for other things as well, such as dishing out yellow cards.

Bundesliga outlines new African content strategy
Spoiler: show
The Bundesliga, Germany’s top-flight soccer association, has outlined a new growth strategy to connect with soccer fans in Africa.

Speaking at a conference in South Africa, Bundesliga International chief executive Robert Klein told of the organisation’s plans to take advantage of the advancement in technology to deliver targeted media content to fans and increase viewership across the continent.Klein noted the approach to deliver localised content to fans as a ‘key driver’ for the Bundesliga in order to boost fan engagement and expand its global presence – highlighting how Africa’s technological growth opens up new options via digital platforms.

He said: “With more than half a billion Africans now owning a mobile phone, we’re working with our broadcast partners to continually adapt our content strategy to account for the different ways people are consuming content, taking a much more localised approach to target specific audience groups.

“The growth in the continent’s technological infrastructure provides us with the opportunity to reach more football fans, on a more regular basis.”

However, Klein also emphasised the importance of the Bundesliga having a physical presence in Africa, with the league having taken part in various on-site initiatives on the continent.“Localised activations, such as the recent Bundesliga Legends Tour we held [recently] in Johannesburg with Jay-Jay Okocha, remain an important component of our growth strategy,” said Klein. “That saw over 2,000 fans interact with the Bundesliga over the weekend.

“Providing a physical presence really resonates well with Africans who appreciate the efforts being made to not only bring fans closer to the game, but also the impact we’re having on local communities.”

The Bundesliga is the best-attended soccer league in Europe, with average crowds of 41,000.
