Problem as in...? That has nothing to but with his still-commendable defensive stats. To answer the question anyway, I don't rate players on assists, nor do I rate players for goals except in the case of pure #9 strikers. I rate what I watch.

I was wondering about this is another discussion I was having!!! Where can I look at the nature of assists by player? I'm pretty sure Kroos has inflated figured because of Ramos/Ronaldo goals on corners and freekicks.

Nevermind. Constructed the data myself cause it was bugging me. Here it is, for everyone's amusement:

The Kroos assist figure just bugged me. It seemed fishy. So I dug up a bit.



It turns out that Kroos has only 1 more open-play assist than Thiago (numbers are pretty small so it's not really valid data to base conclusions upon). What is really interesting (I suspected something fishy) is that Kroos' assist per 90' metric is very very veeery inflated by corner kicks and set pieces. Out of 10 assists, only 3 come from open play.

Now, Kroos IS probably the best set piece taker in Europe at the moment, no ones disputing that. But you also have to wonder, how much responsibility for those assists is due to Kroos and how much is due to Ronaldo/Ramos exceptional heading abilities? We don't really have any good headers, except Hummels (who is no Ramos anyway...). Food for thought.

As to how that translates into chances created, I'm not sure, but pointing out that Kroos is the primary and undisputable indirect set-piece/corner taker for Real and Thiago is just a partial one for us probably skews the data.

IMO, Kroos is by far the single most overrated footballer in Europe.

Hahaha. Depends on which ratings you're comparing him to. He is undoubtedly one of the best MF around, but not THE best like most people think and say.
