I’m with this guy.

I’d be okay with Thomas staying but he has to accept a bench/sub role in the future. He’s not getting back to his former level. This season Kovac has given him a free reign and James injury has helped him become a constant in the starting eleven but he’s still not doing enough as a forward as often as he can/should.

Yes he’s had a few good games in the last few weeks but they’ve been rare. This is not the standard of what should be acceptable performances at a top club like Bayern.

I’ll be blunt here. The only reason Müller is getting such a long run is because of him being a native Bavarian (German and White). I love him for what he represents but your identity can only take you so far in the absence of results.

This is about where I fall, too.

A few thoughts:

1. I've long defended Müller but it's been a LONG time since he's been at a top level and at his age I think it's okay to say that he's peaked. I don't think he gets any better from here on out.
2. However, I do think he's still better than many claim. Absolutely, 100% is not anywhere near his peak, but I don't think he's as finished as some would say either. We can discuss the merits of the stats but quite simply his stats are still very good and on the whole the team is more likely to get a good result with Müller in the lineup than with him on the bench. Is that because of Müller or someone else? I don't know. But at the end of the day this trend has been consistent.
3. Of course when exploring a sale you have to consider the buying party. Who is interested in buying?
4. As I mentioned above, you have to also consider sale value vs "on-pitch value". Considering point #2 - that I think Müller is worse than he was but not as poor as often claimed - I think it is unlikely we are able to sell him for a fee commensurate with his value on the pitch. And that is a losing proposition. If it would cost more to replace him than we would get for selling him, why sell?

OF course the kicker to all of this is as you have mentioned: it's one thing to keep a player on the team. it's another to keep them around AND always start them.

I don't think Müller should be an every-match starter anymore, no way.
But I also think that there's next-to-nothing for us to gain by selling Müller, except for maybe making a few fans feel better for themselves.
Selling Müller hardly provides any improvement compared to keeping Müller but moving him into a bench role.

I'm not a fan of his current form (since ancelloti came tbf), but I'm somewhat confident that under the right coach and tactics and surrounded by world class players, he can be really good again. But we ain't getting jupp or pep back, so I don't think selling him is the worst idea

Question of the day.

Do you think that it is the time to start seriously looking for Neuer's successor?

My candidates are the following.

Onana
Oblak
Areola
Ter Stegen
De Gea (might be on a free transfer)

Of course, we desperately need Ter Stegen. Should be in a separate thread though.

Areola's not better than Yann Sommer. Which is to say very good, but nowhere near the elite level.

Ter Stegen, Alisson, Ederson, Oblak, Kepa and Pickford to me are the premier contenders for the elite echelon of goalkeepers. Oblak's the only pure shotstopper in there because he's insanely good - De Gea will always be second class.

Oblak is probably the best shot stopper and most reliable GK. But he sucks playing the ball with his feet

Although in today's football that is a desirable skill to have for a gk , it is not a must imo
