I don't think Renato is more of a defensive midfielder. His tackles are great, yeah, but his creativity is even more

You don't have to be a "CM" to play as a cm in the 4-3-3.

If we play 4-3-3 or 4-4-2, I would bet that Muller +2 wingers start with Robert upfront.

James/Isco play CM on Madrid, Iniesta, Turan and Rafinha play Cm on barcelona, Di Maria and pastore plays "CM" for psg, etc...

I said this a few times, It's not just thiago, alonso, vidal, renato, martinez and kimmich. It's also, muller and every AM we have on our team.

I don't think Mueller is effective playing in that kind of position.

When Muller plays as an AM in a 4141 or 4231 it looks more like a 4222/424 since he plays really close to the box but does a really good job linking with the midfield and holding up play.

Muller does a hell a lot better than Robert in linking and holding up play, even though Robert is technically our "CF."

However, with carlo coming in, Robert might play better with his tactics.

I'm still hoping Müller can develop his ability to become a world class cf and rotate with Lewa. It would free up the SS/CAM role for Götze who can link up with Lewa. I feel like we should facilitate the opportunity for Götze to ignite and play with Lewa just like in bvb.

I feel Muller is wasted as a true CF over his shadow striker role, he gets more freedom to find pockets of space to be effective without worrying about getting in the box and being a target man like a true CF.

True, he probably won't be as effective at making those unorthodox but effective runs. But to be honest I wouldn't mind sacrificing his effectiveness to add a creative playmaker like Götze. Müller to me feels like a luxury player that scores unusual goals and assists,as opposed to being a necessary component in a build up. His two strengths are effective runs and goal scoring ability. Whereas Götze can make the same passes but he also can tightly dribble and take some really good shots. I think a prime in-form Götze would be more effective at CAM than a prime in-form Müller. But I also think prime in-form Müller is more effective at CF than a prime in-form Götze.

Thing is we never really had an in-form Götze here...

Mueller is a complete footballer... he can do everything one can ask, OK that penalty against Atletico was not that nice but he didn't elect himself to be a penalty taker. :P

If there's one player in the squad who's allowed to miss an all-important penalty, it's Müller...
