So, now that Alaba is out and yet Schweini is not fully back, how do we line-up? Does Bernat go back to the three man defense or do we roll out Benatia-Dante-Boa as a back three?

I think we'll go back to the drawing board...

or here Lahm doing Alaba

Aren't you forgeting a little certain someone who just so happens to be Buli joint-Topscorer right now? :?

I say Pep should try Alonso as a libero (which is ideal for when Schweini and Thiago are back. Now:

or even better:

Müller is hard-working enough to play that position IMHO.

Pep likes Müller's workrate, but thinks Müller only has the instinct to play striker*. Robben gets the whole right wing to himself on the rare occasion that Rafinha doesn't start.

I can see Pep going back to having two centerbacks with Xabi playing almost right between them. Xabi is one of our last guys Pep can use to change the "formation" mid-game without having to utilize a substitution. Amazed that Bayern are now reduced to basically their two oldest and their two youngest center midfielders, now that Schweini, Thiago, Martinez, and Alaba are out. Wonder if Gaudino starts making the bench again.

*According to MP's book anyway.

Not at least until Schweini is back, I guess.

I think when Basti is fully fit we'll begin to see

Ribery can come in for Müller pushing Götze centrally, Rafinha for Alonso and push Lahm into midfield, and maybe Rode for anyone else.

Re: 2014/15 Tactics & Formations Thread

Postby Badger » Wed Nov 12, 2014 12:45 pm

I’m busy at work in recent weeks and not on the forum as often as I used to be. I like this thread, and it is one that I drop into quite often. I’m wondering now about the emphasis on formations. Are we behind the times talking so much about rigid formations, when Guardiola is demonstrating that fluidity is his vision for the way forward? For example, do we really know where Bernat plays on the pitch, other than somewhere on the left? And where are Lahm and Goetze playing in midfield? Lahm has been seen in the opponent’s penalty box more often this season that in the previous decade. And how often do we see Lewandowski on the wing? And how many games have we seen where we can’t be sure whether Bayern have three or four defenders. And so forth. Yes, there has always been some roaming, but it now seems to be deliberately moving to new levels. It leaves the opposition not sure what formation and tactics they are playing against – a very modern strategy. I think the time has come for tactics fans to start studying (and appreciating) Guardiola’s fluidity.
