After seeing Martinez and Gustavo play recently, i think Martinez and Schwienstiger should be used against top European sides like Dortmund, Madrid, Barcelona, and etc while Gustavo should be used against Bundesliga sides like Schalke

^ It all depends on the form of the player. Plus, Gustavo has proven to be better when faced with the former set of opponents you've mentioned.

Thats true Gustavo has done well but I think Martinez would he twice as effective cause he would be able to generate offense through his killer passes he has displayed when he is on the field. I acknowledge Gustavo is a defensive beast and killed Madrid's midfield play last year but he offers no offensive help and misplaces a number of his passes. If you are playing Barcelona where every second of possession you can muster counts, you cant have misplaced passes or you will never see the ball again.

I'd love to see a diamond formation like this:

----------Gustavo-----------
Schweini-----------Martinez
-----------Kroos------------
-----Muller-----Mario (either one)

But of course that would mean no wings, so it's very unlikely that we'll see that.

Dortmund is not a top European side :P

Also if even Thomas Schaaf abolishes the diamond then it's safe to assume that the formation is dead. Wings are way to important in today's game, especially for us and with the player material we have.

I don't think that a formation is ever dead. Formations come in and out of fashion, but innovation and having the right players to play that formation can win you trophies. Once someone is successful with that formation, others will start using it.

I do think we have the right players for this formation, but, like you said, we have a lot of strength on the wings. It would be stupid not to use them regularly. That's why I said it's highly unlikely.

The Gustavo-Schweinstiger combo hasnt worked for the past 2 seasons so Im saying that maybe playing him is bit the best thing to do in those games. I know they arent a top side :P

We defeated them earlier this season with Gustavo-Kroos, so I wouldn't think much into it.

Does Bayern Munich still implement zonal marking on set pieces?

Probably, I'd love a source for future reference too if someone can give us a proper answer.

So what's your preferred tactic once everyone's fit?

Here's mine:

That's a nice formation. I still think, though, that our front four are basically all interchangeable without loss of quality.

Back six look good and would probably be my choice as well, even though I'm not as hell-bent on Dante over Boateng as I used to be.
