If we were to go with a 4-3-3, I would suggest Gustavo-Martinez-Schweini.

I think we should only use this against the top teams though, especially in away games. For the Bundesliga and most games I think our players fit in a 4-2-3-1 better.

Muller as a forward? This is probably Robben's last year here and he looks FIRED up from what I've seen. I'd say this is Robben's last year to shine PROPER. Let's try to keep him in the starting XI -Robben-Gomez-Ribery. Where would Muller fit in'?

I like the idea of a 4-3-3. We need to get more of our great wing players in the game for longer spells. The only thing I question with a 4-3-3 is where Schweinsteiger would best fit. Would be be the lone-holding DMF or would he be moved out to the wing?

He'd be the central midfielder driving into space, not on the wing or the anchor.

@ Quaazi - Would Shaqiri be better as a starter or a supersub in a 4-3-3?

Shaqiri is better as an anything in anything. :)

Seeing him play as a false nine in a 4-3-3 would be a particular treat, though.

OK, you got me salivating there, congratulations :D.

I cam into this thread to suggest a possible 4-3-3 as a surprise weapon, and I'm delighted to see it's already being discussed :).

4-3-3 is EPIC. But what is the MAJOR difference between 4-3-3 and 4-3-2-1? (Other than the wingers playing behind the striker, closer to the middle, and being SSes)?

Like MG is capable of link up play. You're thinking of the other Mario!

Mandukic does seem much more atune to through-balls than Gomez. In both timing his run and playing the through-ball himself. If we do stay with a 4-2-3-1, I think Gomez might be usurped.

Well in a 4-3-3 the emphasis is put on the one area where there is no player, that is, the attacking midfield. Both the wide forwards and the midfield duo will drive into this space, leaving the play very fluid as the wingbacks seek to overlap and the midfielders know that they can take more liberties going forward because they have an anchor man defending their asses.

Meanwhile, in a 4-2-3-1, the wingers (note me saying wingers instead of wide forwards) will play a more traditional style - putting in crosses, providing width, occasionally moving inside and seeking a through ball. The attacking midfielder is the focal point of play, with the double pivot taking turns to get forward (or if the double pivot has a very one-dimensional player in it, for example Kroos and Gustavo, only one makes forward runs while the other one stays back. In the end though it is not as fluid a formation as the 4-3-3 because there is less empty space up front for creative players to move in, so attacking against a team that has parked the bus is more difficult because the midfield is ridiculously flooded.

Of course, the role of the wingers is very important in the defensive phase as well - in a 4-2-3-1, they need to be a lot more hard working because they will have to defend a lot deeper , essentially in two banks of four. A 4-3-3 doesn't require such commitment from the wingers - often one winger can rest while the other defends, achieving the same two banks of four. Though usually you'll see a 4-1-4-1 in defense instead.

The 4-3-3 has really won me over after we abandoned our lunatic 4-2-4 that almost got us a treble. I don't know why we persist with a 4-2-3-1, because we've got lazy inside forwards and a perfect anchor man that fit a 4-3-3 well, and we also have those same lazy inside forwards and a highly mobile second striker that fit a 4-2-4 so well. What we DON'T have is a modern playmaker a la Özil/Sneijder/David Silva that prospers in a 4-2-3-1 where all the play comes through him.

Perhaps the most sweeping statement that can be made is that a 4-3-3 promotes proactive football while a 4-2-3-1 promotes reactive football. Obviously this is not set in stone, but they do fit those styles better.

Hate to ruin that great analysis of the 4-2-3-1 but I wanted the 4-3-2-1, not the 4-2-3-1. Still good though.

The 4-3-2-1 is a stupid formation and you should be ashamed for even bringing it up.

4-3-2-1? What are we, Inter Milan?

If you ask me, I would go one crazy step forward and suggest the 4-1-3-2 when playing against teams parking the bus.

EDIT: Of course given that the opposing team doesn't have the counter-attacking ability of BVB. In those cases, 4-3-3 would suit us well both on the defensive and offensive ends.
