For some reason or other, I sat up and watched this game, even though the kick-off was at 0100 in our time zone. I must say I enjoyed it all. The opponents had a few weaknesses in attack, but they were good enough defensively, and technically skilful enough, to represent a good test for a Bayern team that is neither complete nor sharp enough just yet. In the end, there were slightly more chances than goals for both teams, and Bayern's winning by a 1-goal margin was probably a fair result.
I think that almost all the Bayern players played well enough to not cause any great concern. Yes, virtually all need some improvement, and some are adjusting to new positions and formations, but all is ok so far. I thought that the youngest players were the highlight. Gaudino is 17, and was playing in central midfield, against one of the former greats of Mexican football - older, experienced players - and he didn't look out of place. Indeed, that dribbling run he made into the box was one of the best moments of the game. I think he is one of the exciting talents for the not-too-distant future. Then Scholl came on late and almost scored a second goal. He looks like a great talent too - technically brilliant and with a good vision. It is not difficult to see why Guardiola gave them some playing time. Hojbjerg? Ah, yes! We forget how young he is too. He plays with the physicality, confidence and ability of a regular in the team. With Hojbjerg, Green, Gaudino and Scholl coming along, the future looks exciting.
"Wherever that man went, he went gratefully."
