How nice it is though to start the first match of the season with 2 new signings in the starting XI and playing a combined 170 minutes, despite injuries to Thiago Silva, Chilwell and Ziyech? When was the last time this happened at Bayern?

Last season we had Pavard come on for his debut in the 80'.
The season before that we had Goretzka come on for his debut in the 64'.

It was in 2017 that we played our first match of the season properly with new players, with Rudy completing 90 minutes and Tolisso completing 84 minutes.

Of course it's nice. When you got a club owner pumping unlimited money interest free, you can afford to buy several key players every summer if you wish to.

Another interesting twitter thread from Swiss Ramble, some excerpts:

Hard to say much after one game, but Kepa's still rubbish, that defense is still shambolic, and their midfield is nothing to brag about, either.

Fun in attack tho. Perhaps getting Chilwell and/or Silva in there might improve things, but frankly I don't see either (or both!) as totally rejuvenating that defense, but not sure that's on the players so much in the first place. Just don't really rate Lampard that much tbh

Manchester United lost at home 1-3 to Crystal Palace hahaha

I sometimes read RedCafe and the Sancho thread. I find it puzzling tbh. They really really think that they are just one big singing away from challenging for the league. It is amazing that United fans are completely oblivious to the extremely poor state their squad is in. It is a really interesting study of collective delusion. I mean, they spent all that money on Lukaku, Sanchez, Mhkitaryan, Pogba and are still no closer to winning the league, how can they not see that that is not helping them?!?

Hope they do sign Sancho, it would be 120m in the trash because even with him they are no better than 4th place.

It is entirely clear to me that instead of wasting 120m in Sancho, they should be getting 5-6 new 20m youngsters and be patient. Heck, I'd sell Pogba and reinvest that money on another 3-4 players. One big signing is getting them nowhere.

[/Rant]

I think this season Pep is gonna be third...

1) Liverpool 2) Chelski 3) Shitty 4) Maybe United but not a certainty.

Yep, totally agree. I mean Sancho certainly wouldn't hurt but frankly they have problems all over the pitch. I look at their first team right now and see maybe 7, 8 players at most who should be "first team quality" for a club like United (For me, Rashford, Pogba, Bruno, Martial, Greenwood, van de Beek, AWB...Not much beyond that). de Gea peaked years ago and is clearly on the decline, Maguire plays like a player 1/4th his cost, Lindelof is next to useless, and the rest is largely deadweight. Players like Lingard, Fred, Bailly, Matic, Pereira, Dalot, MataRojo, Jones, etc....you could replace all of them with an "average" premier league player and notice no difference IMO. So as you say - one 120m signing isn't going to fix their issues, they'd be better set investing that money all over the pitch. And I don't even disagree with Pogba tbh. I think he has the quality to be a top player still, but it just doesn't seem to be working at United, feels almost like a luxury player at this point. I could certainly see a case for selling him and investing that money elsewhere either. I don't find their midfield to be particularly balanced at this point. Bruno is clearly an AM, but van de Beek and Pogba both tend to want to play more forward, too, and I don't particularly rate McTominay - I still hold that the smarter buy for them would've been to get a proper DM, maybe even Thiago - rather than van de Beek. Just a lot of positions that all need addressed; adding Sancho would help and be a step in the right direction but frankly I think it's going to take years of work to get them back to a title-challenging level (although the quality of the EPL is as such that they may be able to do that a bit sooner than expected)

Arsenal seem to be closer to the top four as well.
