The current system is encouraging clubs to stock up on players and have more depth than they need at the time the window closes, just in case they suffer an injury crisis whilst the window is closed. This, in turn, reduces competition because the pool of players available to clubs clubs below the top tier is decreased.
Imagine, hypothetically God forbid, the team bus is involved in an accident today which puts Neuer and Ulreich out for the rest of the season. We'd have to promoted Fruechtl and Hoffmann, but then who's going to keep goal for FC Bayern II in the 3. Liga until January at the earliest when the window opens again?
I don't understand why we're hell-bent on refusing to let clubs fix an injury situation with money they rightfully earned, in, say, October. Why? What advantage does it serve at all? Are we doing it simply because we're used to doing it or does it actually serve an actual purpose? I understand the use of it late in the competition. I also wouldn't like to see a KO round of the CL where one team buys some 5 new players just for those 2 legs, so I agree with closing it in February, but before then I don't see the excuse.
