Chelsea are ahead with around 8mil. in this transfer window. Costa, Fabregas, Luis and Drogba are cheaper than David Luiz, Lukaku and Demba Ba.

True. Wonder why the bandwagoners haven't jumped and joined the other Manchester club. Their brand has gone beyond the players most likely because for me, there's no one really exceptional in their current squad anymore to lure and sustain interest. But they're a train wreck right now and it's something we can't look away so it helps them inadvertently.

Just looking at Benatia news on twitter and 1 out of every 10 tweet is Bayern related while the rest are from United fans who believes they can get Benatia. Who in their rational mind would even think a top player would join them in their current situation if they're not desperate like Mata? Even in SAF era, they were not much of a magnet for top players. Disjointed self-image IMO.

A small anecdote about United's popularity and pulling power of David Beckham. Last year, Fifa had to issue a letter to all the smaller football associations and coaches/journalists around the world who were eligible to vote for the Ballon d'Or 2013. The content of the letter and I'm paraphrasing:

"David Beckham retired from professional football so please don't vote for him anymore"

I didn't understand the reason why they extended the contract with Nani to begin with.
