1974: Preliminary designs of various sizes, construction methods and general site layouts to be adopted were prepared by Public Works Department employees.
1975: A new design utilizing mostly locally available materials and trade skills was drawn up. The canopy structure was also redesigned and a suspended steel structure introduced.
1976: Actual work on the site began and consisted mainly in the leveling and preparatory site works.
1977: The drainage system on the playing area started.
1978: The playing area, which accommodated a 105m x 70m football pitch was leveled up and finished with a 15cm layer of graded soil and peat moss with turf seeds imported from Holland.
1978: Trial seeding was carried out in October.
1980: Proper seeding commenced under the supervision of officials from the Department of Agriculture.
1980: In June an eight lane 400metres athletic track according to Olympic standards surrounded the playing area with preparatory foundations for an eventual laying of a synthetic top finish on the track.
1980: Official opening on 14th December 1980 at 1.00 p.m. (The MFA was not invited to attend)
1981: First ever MFA match on 6th December when Zurrieq defeated Senglea Atheltic 2-1
1982: First Malta international match on 26th December 1982 when a friendly against Bulgaria ended 0-0.
