Re: UEFA Coefficient Rankings

Winning the Champions Legaue would be HUGE for Bayern. Bayern in last few seasons (especially after those unlucky defeats against Real Madrid and after being outplayed by Liverpool last year) had somewhat lost their aura as a top European football team.

If we can win the Champions League by beating some of the PL’s famous teams (Tottenham and Chelsea) and Barcelona (a team that has the best player of this generation) and now the best team in France, it would boost Bayern’s reputation immensely and bring us right back into the fold as a European footballing superpower.

We’ve done it! Mission Triple 2.0 had been a resounding success! 8)

However the last thing we need to do is rest on this laurel. Bayern must not be satisfied and have to keep pushing for more European success. Although equaling Real Madrid doesn’t seem possible, overtaking AC Milan is very much within reach.

The club and the players must do everything to ensure that the 2020s is Bayern’s decade in football (like the previous decade clearly belonged to RM). The sooner we win European Cup #7, the better it would be for Bayern’s popularity and global brand.

Screw simply passing Milan. That will happen sooner or later, in my opinion the goal should be to targeting Real Madrid especially while they are building. With Sane and another the future addition of a midfield maestro we can enter into a Bayern-era of European football in my opinion that could see us make a dent in R.Madrid's UCL gap. The core of our current treble winning squad are entering into their prime compared to the previous squad which was in its prime and getting older, Bayern's chances of starting a dominant era is strong imo.

Bayern will not be surpassing Real Madrid (who have won SEVEN more European Cups) anytime soon. Setting realistic goals is key.

In the next decade if we win 2-3 European Cups (and provided Milan, Liverpool, Barcelona, Ajax, Internazionale and Manchester United don’t win again anytime soon) we can cement our position as the second biggest brand in European football. That must be the aim. Therefore, winning European Cup #7 as soon as possible is the key and the next logical step.

have to admit, i did not think Bayern was in a position to take this title. would have naturally assumed we'd be in 3rd place or so.

Only because the coefficients system of UEFA is terrible. You get as much points beating Barcelona 8-2 in a neutral stadium in a quarterfinal as you get for beating, say, Plzen 4-3 at home in the group stages.

Damn! I am surprised to find out there is not a weighted system that is part of the calculations.

In any case RM’s winning seasons will begin to stop counting from next season so we might manage to hold onto this for some time.

There is some weighting but it's kind of generous towards the group stages IMO.

So it breaks down as follows.
Elimination in first qualifying round = 0.5 points
Elimination in second qualifying round = 1 point
Group stage participation = 4 points
All wins from group stage onward = 2 points
All draws from group stage onward = 1 point
Round of 16 participation = 4 points
And there is a bonus point for making the round of 16, QF, SF, and/or Final.

Note that because of the odd circumstances this year they DID weight some differently to adjust.
Normally it is 2 points for a win, but because the QF and SF were changed to single-leg, a win was adjusted to be worth 3 points rather than 2.

That means we earned:
4 points for group stage participation
12 points for group stage wins (6*2)
4 points for participating in R16
1 point for making R16
4 points for beating Chelsea (2*2)
1 point for making QF
3 points for beating Barca
1 point for making SF
3 points for beating Lyon
1 point for making Final
2 points for beating PSG
For a total of 36 points.

SO, for our situation it is fairly clear-cut (save for the small wrinkle about 3 vs 2pt matches) - we won all our games, and won the title, so we're taking home pretty much maximum points. I guess in theory a perfect season would get you 38 points (if we'd played all two-legged ties as usual and won both), but it is what it is.

Where it gets hairy is when you drop matches here or there. Even last year is a great example.

Liverpool won it all, but they only accrued 29 points.
4 for the group stage;
6 for wins in the group stage (3*2 + 3*0);
4 for R16 participation
1 for making R16
1 for drawing vs Bayern
2 for beating Bayern
1 for making QF
4 for beating Porto (2*2)
1 for making SF
2 for beating Barca (1*2 + 1*0)
1 for making Final
2 for winning Final vs Spurs
For a total of 29 points.

Meanwhile, Barcelona were famously eliminated in the semifinals vs Liverpool....
4 for group stage participation
8 for group stage wins (4*2)
2 for group stage draws (2*1)
4 for R16 participation
1 for making R16
1 for drawing Lyon
2 for beating Lyon
1 for making QF
4 for beating United (2*2)
1 for making SF
2 for beating Liverpool
....for a total of.....30 points. Yes, Barcelona, who were eliminated in the semifinals - finished with more coefficient points than the team who eliminated them and won the title - largely due to a stronger group stage performance.

So, all that to say: I guess we owe some thanks to Kovac for at least helping us maintain a strong record on the group stages! Quite literally - in spite of winning the title, a good group stage performance is what has us on top of the coefficient rankings right now. We could've won the title, but if we'd won say 4/6 matches in the group, we wouldn't be first right now.
