Sounds like Kovac is actively trying to get fired if that’s really his plan...

If he absolutly want to play Martinez then he should play him instead of Goretzka.

If Martinez sets foot on the pitch we are 100% out, he doesn’t have the legs to press in midfield and that’s exactly what we need in this match, to press and snuff out link up play to the front 3. Martinez can’t provide that. He’s looking slower than Alonso did, it’s really sad.

While I'm not the biggest Martinez fan, I do think we need a real #6 in this match in order to stabilize the gap between the defense and the midfield. I'm not sure Thiago is best suited to do that against Liverpool. Bayern will play more defensively against Liverpool and a #6 will be one of the most important position on the field for us, esp. if Alaba and Kimmich will be adventurous on the wings.

...

Martinez is one of the slowest players in the squad. Liverpool is literally the least appropriate opponent for him. On the other hand, Ballerina is rather consistent in DM role and is easily our best player in that position.

I think I would put Javi in there but not for James....

Depends from where we are going to attack Liverpool...

I love Serge but we need experience against this inexperienced team...
I would have loved a Robben vs their Scottish LB...

Nevermind... if Coman is fit I would start with Ribery and Coman as wingers...

My form

Neuer

Kimmich Sule Hummels Alaba
Thiago Javi
James
Coman. Ribery
Lewa

Exactly

I can see what Kovac would be trying to do by playing Martinez, but then it should be Goretzka and not James the one replaced

We need james for his set pieces...
Something which Liverpool aren't good to defend at....

You know, if only he had been given the match practice he DID deserve, this match would have benefited from a Renato Sanches. However, at this point, Kovac would need to be extremely brave/mad to throw him in at the deep end like this.

Yup, I've been the biggest fan of Martinez but alas his body is broken and he looks slower than a freight train these days.

Martinez & Goretzka is such an awful pairing.

Well, I'd rather we hedge our bets on getting the first part done right (crosses in), then worry about what comes next (heading the cross).

Goretzka is not a midfielder. He is a decent player with a great eye for goal. He is a luxury player and someone who should be used as a sub to change the state of the game when we are attacking. He is definitely not a player who will exert some midfield influence when it's 0-0 against the european heavyweights.

I don't know what his position is but it is not midfield.
If we start with Javi+Goretzka I expect Klopp to take full tactical advantage and flood and overrun us in midfield.

Thiago will have to play out of his skin and will need Alaba and Kimmich to support, to get us going in midfield.

I still see Coman as our best winger and he is by far better on the left, that’s the major reason I’d go with Coman and Gnabry. Gnabry is also particularly good at making off the ball runs in behind which is a weak spot for Liverpool currently.

So, why you are a Bayern fan exactly? Or should I say - "fan".

Look, it's a valid question and I'll do you the courtesy of responding.

I started on the path of being a Bayern fan since the 1-2 loss to Porto. It's odd for a young kid to be drawn to a losing team but It was something about the way they conducted themselves in defeat I think that made an impression on me. I'm not sure, I can't put a finger on it but I was hooked.

That was more than 30 yrs ago.
I've been through the phase you are probably going through right now. Unconditional belief in the team being the best and capable of destroying all in it's path. Over time you'll come to temper that with reality and then the trick is not to dive headlong into an abyss of pessimism.

Btw, the reality 4 yrs ago for me was such that I too believed we were the best and could destroy all. See I'm not all doom & gloom :)

Being a fan, as I see it, evolves the same ways as a marriage. You fall in love, the first years are bliss, you fall out/in of love along the way again but persist with the relationship because there is something at the core that binds it.

So, I have every right to be realistic and predict a loss.
Why?

- Our away record so far is shambolic and Anfield is not the place to plan a change in fortune.
- Our attack lacks speed and is the complete opposite of what Liverpool base their attacking game on

But, this is the most important reason for me:

Liverpool, the way they play, defend & attack are always in it. They are much much more likely to come back from 0-1 or 0-2 to get
something out of a game and they are again much much more likely to turn a 1-0 into 2-0 and a 2-0 into 3-0.

Bayern on the other hand this season, seem to need to score that first goal to get a result at the end of 90 mins and worse look like they've been hit by some kryptonite once they go 1-0 up.

So, 1-2 to Liverpool for me for the first leg. Maybe a draw in the second.
