It has nothing to do with rules. Everything is on a case by case basis and Bayern are appealing.

This could be a blessing in disguise for Bayern. Bayern could actually go into both legs with no deadwood (provided Boateng stays away from the starting eleven)

We have stagnated in terms of squad planning for the last 3 seasons and Liverpool have done the complete opposite.
From an average side 3 seasons ago, they are now CL contenders.

Anyway, Bayern's best XI is a match for Liverpool's best XI and I would argue we have a better bench.

However, we cannot have a best XI at the moment even if everyone is fit and available because of Neuer's form.
His stats at the moment are shocking.

You cannot take on a major opponent in the CL without a clutch goalkeeper.
Liverpool learnt this themselves the hard way.

The detailed analysis posted in the Neuer thread was eye opening for me. I could not put my finger on why Neuer would all of a sudden lose his ability for impeccable positioning. The theory is he is compensating for not putting too much weight on his foot. Makes sense.

Neuer deserves to fight his way back to top form but we can get away with him at half throttle in the BL not in the CL.

We are not going on outscore liverpool in a high scoring tie. We don't have the attack to do that to their water tight defence.
So, our best bet is keeping it tight and trying to win the 'big' moments in the game. This is something we haven't been able to do for the last 3 seasons in CL semi-finals and something that is near impossible to do without your goalkeeper in top form.

I thought that it would be more... intended or not is was a very very bad action plus straight red. I think we'll be ok though...

When this draw was made I was very disappointed and fully expected Liverpool to maul Bayern. However, recently I’ve been feeling good about this tie. I believe that Bayern at their best can defeat Liverpool and Liverpool are not invincible and lack depth in their squad. I hope we put in a good performance at the Anfield to take into the home leg.

Actually I have similar feelings, I was quite sure that Liverpool will beat Bayern, but when you think about it Liverpool will have defensive problems because of absence of Van Dijk and Bayern are solid enough to bring a promising result to Munich, even if it would be a narrow defeat like 2-1. Liverpool proved to be much more fragile away from home this season so anything could happen in the second leg. I don't see them as strong favourites anymore. I'd say it's 55-45 for Liverpool.

Alexander-Arnold injured and is out for 4 weeks. He'll probably be back just in time for this match.

Having watched Liverpool a lot recently, I have come to the conclusion that Liverpool are pretty terrible when they don’t have the space behind the CBs to counter with their pacy front three.

Key to this tie is going to be:
1. Not playing an ultra high defensive line
2. Stopping the supply from midfield to their front three (like Man City did recently)
3. This will force them to play diagonal crosses through their fullbacks and here our back four and Neuer have to be assertive and commanding.
4. Try luring Liverpool out and play two really fast and explosive wingers (Coman and Davies maybe?) to catch Liverpool out on the break.

If we play patient sideways slow possession buildup then that’ll be playing into Liverpool’s hands. Need to create goal scoring situations with as less passes/touches as we can.

IMo Liverpool are very similar to Bayern's 2010

I just hope our center backs turn up. At the moment that is my biggest issue with the team. Sule is good and is viewed highly by Kovac but Boateng and Hummels have a tendency to ball watch and with their slow pace that could be detrimental. I think we can beat them in midfield with the personnel we have. Manchester City showed that if you snuff out their midfield their attack will be stranded. I am cautiously optimistic about both games.

Furthermore, I believe Van Dijk is out of the first leg so hopefully that means Lovren starts. [-o<

To anyone who may be interested, I have a spare ticket next to me in the Kop for the first leg at Anfield for this tie. I am looking to swap this + the difference in cash for two tickets to the second leg at the Allianz Arena. If anyone on this forum is travelling to Liverpool, does not yet have a ticket and thinks they would be interested, let me know by replying to this post.

If you watched Man City's game against Liverpool, you'll see that the key is in the midfield. They didn't give them a slight moment of thinking. The problem is that Liverpool's front three can easily find room for a run. You can't really stop that, not with our slow defenders, at least. So you gotta cut the supply. Which Pep did so beautifully. Technically gifted midfielders weren't able to pick a pass to Salah the whole match. That's what we gotta do. I want to see our midfielders run the whole game, front to back, midfielder to midfielder, like Bernardo Silva, who's not even a central midfielder, did.
A midfield of Thiago - Goretzka - James would be perfect. Javi plays to deep and is too prone to one twos.
