But shorter than ours for the semi final, which is what really matters to us.

mmm why do you think so?
Why do you think the final - as opposed to the rest of the competition - is played in a neutral venue in the first place? Where about half if the - immensely expensive - tickets are sold by UEFA directly? Why do you think Blatter spoke of being an NPO so often?

Big news: FIFA and UEFA generate money through their competitions... And when they play in neutral venues, they usually pay none of the costs but take most of the income... Which then consequently is not revenue, but income...

I understand your point but I have to disagree. Ticket sales are not comparable to revenues from selling broadcasting rights worldwide. See UEFA's income statement https://www.uefa.com/MultimediaFiles/Download/OfficialDocument/uefaorg/Finance/02/63/95/00/2639500_DOWNLOAD.pdf

With this format you would have 6 games less...and we are not talking about Bate Borisov - Olimpiakos. For this year we are talking about:

- Bayern vs Barcelona
- Manchester City vs Lyon (could have been Juventus)
- PSG vs Leipzig
- Atletico Madrid vs Atalanta
- Bayern/Barcelona vs Manchester City
- let's say PSG vs Atletico Madrid

these are all matches with high TV shares. Even non-football supporters would watch Bayern - Barcelona on TV. Next year it could be Real Madrid - Barcelona or Real Madrid - Atletico etc.

Besides, we all know that most finals in the last decade have been boring. I'd argue that KO games would be less exciting and attractive compared to the standard UCL format.

This will lower UEFA's revenues from tv rights and I highly doubt that ticket sales would compensate it.[/quote]Well, fair point, nonetheless you might also think that a sudden death approach draws more viewers like a WC... So I do not necessarily see a loss in TV revenue...

A knockout format actually has 14 games less because the round of 16 wouldn't be 2 legs either. There's no way that 14 games lost is generating more money for UEFA. That's way more games and more games means more TV money. A knockout format 100% does not make UEFA more money

2019/20 UEFA Champions League Discussion Thread

Postby FCBayernMunchen » Sun Aug 09, 2020 5:49 pm

That’s why I suggested a brief summer tournament every 2 or 4 years. It would mean more games and more money, it’d be a highlight and not too much of a burden on the players (at most 3 extra games every few years).

Question is how to pick the 8 teams. Maybe top 8 in European coefficients since the last tournament? Once every 4 years with the finalists of all years and playoffs between semifinalists if there are repeat finalists?

Manchester City have as much rest as Lyon, they would have a day less rest than their opponent in a potential semifinal, and a day less rest than their opponent in a potential final. If this was our schedule, you and I would be complaining and making up conspiracy theories ;)

And this is the reason I do not understand why matches are played at the same time, i.e. 21:00 CET. That way you cannot watch i.e. Bayern vs Chelsea and Barcelona vs Napoli (well, I did but it was a PITA).

Shit. I hope they can just isolate those two players and retest the rest of the team so the tournament can keep going... :| hope they're not any starting XI-level players for them.

I had no doubts that this will happen....
It is spreading like hell fire again...

So if the only ones found positive come from one tm who haven't yet set foot on a football pitch will they jeopardize the whole thing?
