Well what was said about Marcelo was wrong. He wasn't good defensively at some point, but is now elite in all aspects. Kimmich won't have the intelligence to realise that, if his insistence on "being a right back like Dani Alves" is any indicator.
On his time, Dani Alves did quite well as well

IMO, all about the balance. Our problem is that NONE of our defenders know how to defend or want to defend. That's kinda normal for modern FBs, the problem is that our CBs also think they are midfielders or sometimes even wingers (Süle sometimes). No one wants to defend. Everyone wants to attack...

You know damn well that, when Kimmich was referring to Dani Alves, he fully meant he wants to get goals and assists.

Yeah, I dunno, it feels to me like there's a BIG disconnect between what the defenders want to do (or are naturally inclined to do and are best at) and what Kovac *wants* his defenders to do. Of course Hummels and Boateng look to have declined from last year (and in recent years), as is natural with age, but IMO so have some of the others (with the exception of Alaba, who I think has been great this year).
Defending has never really been Kimmich's strong suit but he looks to have taken a step back in that regard since last season. And as we've discussed before, Kimmich's propensity to move more and more forward causes problems for Süle, who frankly also looks worse than he did with Heynckes. For all the focus on defending, our defense looks as poor as it ever has and pretty much every player save for Alaba looks to have declined IMO. Maybe not Rafinha...

In whatever case I think a big part of it is a question of fit. I have long bemoaned Kovac's tactical inflexibility and I can't help but feel that he often wants his defenders to play in a way that doesn't suit their strengths. Meanwhile the midfield and attack seem to play as though the defense is doing what they're "supposed" to do and it feels like this leads to a disconnect all over the pitch, big gaps everywhere. With Marcelo, for example (who really can did develop into a much better defender in recent years, although back down a bit this year IMO), he'd push up and the other defenders would often shift to basically form a back three with the midfielders moving to better accommodate that too. With Kimmich then, it feels like there's no such shift, no adjustment made, and so it just leads to our back line getting spread far too wide or drawn out of position and so on. Attack-minded fullbacks are okay I think, but there has to be some accommodations made in order for it to work well...and having two attacking-minded fullbacks paired with one slow CB and one fast CB who secretly wants to be a CF is not a great recipe for success.

Anyways that's all just kinda spitballing on some generic observations I've had lately, but feels like we're not gonna see too much improvement in defense without some more tactical flexibility from the manager...

Maybe it's just me but I'm seeing a lot of lethargy and lack of motivation. Either the players have their minds firmly set on Liverpool, or it's time to resurrect the theory that they're trying to get Kovac fired. If it's the latter, shame on the players with the timing.

Yeah, hard to pinpoint exactly what's going on, but thru 45 minutes I've only seen maybe 2, 3, 4 players who have looked to be doing much...
