Yes. But he is clearly not now.
Maybe he has been playing RB too much to switch since then, maybe it has to do with the system/tactics (which would not be surprising at all, since Kovac is not nearly on the same level whatsoever, tactically speaking) but it is just a fail now. I love Kimmich and he's one of my favorite players but he brings no discernible advantage to the midfield over our other midfielders.
