Both Thiago and Goretzka have an attacking mentality. We need someone like Martinez (in his prime) to be paired with one of them in my opinion. Our back line is shit as it is with the existence of the likes of Boateng and Hummels.

Thiago is the best defensive player in Germany, there's no need for this deliberate attempt at a "balance" by putting a destroyer just because Thiago can also attack.

We need an anchor man sitting in the hole between defence and midfield to bring stability to our defence and help transition it into midfield (a.k.a. lay it off to Thiago)... he should be an aggressive, determined, great tackler with high endurance.

Thiago's best role is a mix of a supporting ball-winning midfielder combined with a deep-lying playmaker role. We need someone who plays deeper than him.

Thanks for that valuable contribution! I'm sure you've put a lot of time and research into formulating that opinion. Mind sharing the stats you found that led you to arrive at that conclusion?

To be honest, I'd like a nasty type, the guy who does those crunching tackles that opponents are scared of. Thiago's not that type of player... his defending is... elegant.

One single goal. Nice, that settles it then, any player who's ever allowed a goal is a sh*t defender. Such insight

It's not. His best role is the deepest midfielder.

The 'deepest midfielder' is the anchor man who spends the full 90 mins in his own half, three metres in front of the central defenders and roaming in that area never venturing out. Certainly not what one should employ Thiago as.
