Make of this what you will. It seems to me that for most of the season Bayern and Dortmund were pretty consistent (dropping points in around one game per month) with the anomalies being September and November for Bayern, and February and April for Dortmund. Given that Dortmund's came after it can be seen as a case of throwing it away, but on the other hand Dortmund's lead was there because of an anomaly too.
It really is the case (as if the table didn't already show that) that the tiny differences (a draw instead of a loss made the difference here). The league rewards the most consistent team but in this case neither team was totally consistent (because of those two months for each team).
