Between a lie and a hard truth: Club Athletic of Bilbao

This past transfer season FC Bayern went after Spanish player Javi Martínez; a defensive midfielder with multiple qualities who played for Club Athletic of Bilbao. Despite multiple reportedly generous offers, Bilbao or – as they preferred to be called – Club Athletic, didn’t budge. President Urrutia’s announcement that Athletic was not selling any of their players was a call to arms; leaving the Germans to afford no other option than his full release clause – a cool 40 million. The Spanish club’s firm stance surprised not only the Bayern brass but also the rest of the teams making inquires about the midfielder.

Tactical permutations and all that jazz

With the Bundesliga opener a week away, it looks like it is time to start wondering how our team is going to play this season. In the transfer market, we’ve bolstered our team with the signing of Xherdan Shaqiri, Claudio Pizarro, Mario Mandzukic, Dante, Mitchell Weiser and Tom Starke. Finally, the signing of the Athletic Bilbao midfielder Javi Martinez seems to be bogged in semantics in negotiations, yet very close to being completed, so this article will be written on the assumption that Martinez will be wearing all red by Monday.
