Ecuador international striker Christian Benitez died in Qatar on Monday of heart failure at the age of 27, the Ecuadorean Football Federation (FEF) said.

Benitez, who played 58 times for Ecuador, was the son of Ermen Benitez, one of his country's all-time leading goalscorers. [source]

He played one of his first games in Qatar during the weekend after a record 15 million dollar transfer. I don't know if he was at home asleep and had some sort of an allergic reaction and felt stomach pains, went to the hospital and his wife is claiming they didn't treat him for half an hour at least; she was watching from the window next to the emergency room.

Guys who watched the Ecuador vs Germany friendly in Florida: he was one of the two strikers on the team, a record three season Mexican league top goalscorer and a very healthy guy. This is just sad. I really have a hard time talking about it.

Looks like FIFA have announced the 2022 World Cup in Qatar will be played in the winter months so European League games will be played in the summer i guess...

Seems like its more of a "when' than "if" at this point.....
Jim Boyce, from Northern Ireland, said the 54 Uefa associations agreed at a meeting in Croatia that the World Cup should not take place in the summer, when temperatures can reach 50 degrees Celsius.
However, they want Fifa to consult with the game's major stakeholders before making any decision about exactly when the tournament is staged.
Fifa's executive committee is now expected to agree in principle to move the World Cup to the winter at its meeting in Zurich on October 3 and 4.
Boyce said: "What has come out of this meeting, and what I think is sensible, is an agreement by the Uefa countries that the World Cup cannot be played in Qatar in the summer. Everyone was certainly in agreement about that.
"But what the 54 countries do not want Fifa to do is to make a decision yet on exactly when in the year it is going to be played.

"There is still nine years to go and people feel Fifa should sit down with all the major stakeholders and come up with a solution that would cause the minimum disruption to football.
"There is plenty of time to do that in my opinion, and hopefully football will be the winner."
There could well be disagreements in the future however over whether it is played in January 2022 or November/December of that year.
The British associations told the meeting they want to make sure that the Christmas week is protected for domestic football, while Uefa chiefs favour January so that it would not impact on the Champions League.
Fifa are believed to favour November/December so that it does not clash with the winter Olympics.
The meeting saw the 54 European countries split into four groups to debate the issues surrounding moving the tournament in Qatar.
At least one of the groups, including the Scottish FA, suggested a possible start to the tournament as January 22, 2022, and Boyce said his personal preference would be for the end of January and February.
That however would bring Fifa into direct conflict with the powerful International Olympic Committee, who would not want any clash with the winter Olympics.
Other groups at the Dubrovnik meeting had different views on the best date to hold a winter tournament and Boyce said no overall decision was reached on that issue.
He added: "There has been no decision on whether it should be in January or another time. The European federations do not want Fifa to decide on the dates without consultation."
Last week, Fifa general secretary Jerome Valcke said Christmas matches would not be affected by any switch - and that there was no chance of moving the tournament from Qatar.
Valcke said: "We are not talking about taking Christmas or New Year away. Christmas is safe. The World Cup will not be played between December 24-January 1, so that will mean Boxing Day is safe.
"We are not talking about removing we are talking about moving, that's key. We are talking about moving [the tournament] in the year 2022 in the country which has been awarded the World Cup."
The Premier League has always opposed a switch and together with other European leagues has called for there to be no definitive decision next month and a full consultative process.

This sounds like a very promising idea in my opinion, it would bring more meaning into NT games....
Europe's governing body are mulling over a proposal put forward by a Norwegian newspaper which would see non competitive matches faded out for a league format

Uefa are considering scrapping international friendlies in favour of developing a new Nations League competition from 2018 onwards.

The innovative concept, which would see non-competitive fixtures faded out of existence and replaced by as many as nine divisions encompassing all 54 nations, was initially suggested by Norwegian paper Dagbladet.

Their proposal, which includes a promotion and relegation format, was a point of discussion by Europe's governing body at an executive committee meeting in Croatia last month.

President of the Norwegian Football Association, Yngve Hallen, who is a member of the committee, confirmed that the idea is among those under discussion.

He told The Guardian: "It is true that a series of games is one of the models being discussed.

"No-one should have to qualify for this tournament - everyone plays from the first game. And then there is also a recognition that tournament form should be easy to understand for most people. All this we need to work out."

Karl-Erik Nilsson, Sweden's Football Association representative, has backed the proposal due to the perceived difficulty in sparking the public's interests for international friendlies - but insisted that qualifying campaigns will remain unaffected should the concept materialise.

He told Aftonbladet: "It has been established that it is difficult to get interest around friendlies.

"For 2020 it has been looked at whether it would be possible to combine traditional qualifiers with with this league format, instead of friendlies, to increase interest.

"It is worth looking at but we were clear that it can't have an impact on the qualifiers for the Euro tournaments.

"The qualifiers are No.1 and have the highest priority. There won't be more international games because of this."
