Gianni Infantino's new ideas ...
1. A summer club world cup with the strongest 32 teams in the world...
and
2. 40 team world cup, with 16 teams automatically qualified with the remaining 32 teams playing in a knock out decider a week before the proper tournament starts.
Therefore the final will consist of 32 teams as it is now.

Interesting ideas but need a lot of brain storming, logistics, the health aspect of the players, other games. etc

Super like, but only if it replaces the Champions League.

That would mean that 16 nations would have spent a lot of money and time in preparations for a potential World Cup and then go home one week before the tournament starts because of 90 minutes of football.

More games = more money for FIFA
3 teams = less games per team = less exciting for fans

Pretty obvious who the loser is here.

Also, it's a system that favours the usual favourites because since only one team makes it out of the group, it becomes much harder for the mid-level teams to progress. Luck of the draw will become more relevant than ever. On the flip side, it should stop teams from qualifying with all draws and go on to win the competition.

I think I read that 2 teams from each 3-team group go through, IMO, s4cks... Just like the newer formats of the CL, the result will be unequal paths to the final, with lots of extremely weak teams progressing from the group stages just to be embarrassed latter.

That's even worse... makes the group phase pointless. And I thought the new EURO format was already bad...

DFB president drops objections to Gianni Infantino's plans for expanded World Cup
The president of the DFB has said he is now prepared to a greatly expanded World Cup. However, Reinhard Grindel also reiterated concerns about the toll the already jammed football schedule was taking on the players.FB (German football association) President Reinhard Grindel said following a meeting with FIFA Secretary General Fatma Samoura on Tuesday that he had dropped his opposition to a World Cup involving as many as 48 teams, as opposed to the current 32.
"I have made it clear that no additional burden must be placed on the players and the length of the tournament should not be extended," Grindel said.Pitching Gianni Infantino's plans for an expanded World Cup was the main purpose of Samoura's visit to the DFB headquarters in Frankfurt.
"This was the first thing we talked about," the Senegal native said. "We are doing a great deal to ensure the expansion of the World Cup participants is supported by the big footballing nations."
Samoura, who cited the expanded Euro 2016 in France last summer as a positive example, also said that she shared Grindel's concerns about increasing the number of games.
A decision on whether to increase the number of teams taking part in the World Cup - and by how many - is to be taken at the next meeting of the FIFA Council in Zurich next month.
